Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a major add this week with Longlegs, a 2024 horror flick. This takes place in 1990‘s Oregon, with a new(ish) FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), who has a seemingly uncanny(clairvoyant?) ability to finger killers. So she’s put on the case of a serial killer, Longlegs(Nicolas Cage!), brought in by Agent Carter (Blair Underwood), to investigate. But Longlegs has been triggering horrible slayings, with a supposed Satanic edge, that no one can figure it out. And as Harker delves into the case, she must get knee deep in satanic rituals, and the evils that lie there, and finds her own survival is not assured. Kiernan Shipka, Alicia Witt and Michelle Choi-Lee also star, and Osgood Perkins directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2024, and went on to win Best Supporting Actor for Cage at the Golden Scythe Horror Awards, and Best Film Screenwriting at the 2025 Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA. And it gets an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Jen Yamato of the Washington Post called it “nerve-jangling and devilishly bleak, Longlegs is easily the front-runner for scariest movie of 2024.” So you know I’m not watching. Luckily, Hulu also has added romance for Valentine’s Day weekend, like Benefits with Friends, a 2025 Portuguese romance series. Here, Bea(Bruna Marquezine) and Bruno (Sérgio Malheiros) have been friends for years, with no romance involved. But after Bea breaks up with her boyfriend, the pair decide to start dating. But romance brings it’s own complications, and when they break up, will it mean the end of everything, even their friendship? Rayssa Bratillieri, Danilo Mesquita and Malu Rodrigues also star, and there are 2 episodes available now. And this series was nominated for Best Prêmio F5 series and Television: Performance of the Year for Bruna Marquezine at the 2024 Prêmio F5 awards. And it gets an impressive 7/10 on IMDb, so, though I can find no online reviews for this show, as yet, I’m watching. Hulu has also added Sly Lives!, a music documentary from the award winning director, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson(!). This tells the story of the legendary pop group, Sly & The Family Stone and its leader, Sly Stone. Stone was a child musical prodigy in California, and helped superstars like Grace Slick finish songs like Somebody to Love before he started the his own group, the Family Stone with mixed members , white and black, male and female, in 1966. And they soared quickly to the top of the charts with songs like Dance to the Music, and stayed there until the mid 70‘s , when Stone developed drug problems. But this doc, like Questlove‘s Oscar winning documentary Summer of Soul, doesn’t just cover Sly & the Family Stone, but also the culture the accompanied it. He covers the harsh realities black performers faced, in general, but also with the (mainly white) media, that crashed down on him, with drug use. And we gets music legends like Chaka Khan(!), Clinton, D’Angelo and Terry Lewis, attesting to the difficulty of walking the fine line required for a black artist in a (seemingly) white world. And this movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and its gets an sparkling 7.6/10 on IMDb, and a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Candice Frederick of the HuffPost said “while the various artists help assemble a humanistic picture of the great yet tragically flawed musician, they also bring to mind their own struggles to fit inside that impossible space: entertaining but socially conscious, Black but not too Black.” And it has great music , too, so I’m definitely tuning in. And, finally, Hulu has Omni Loop, a 2024 sci-fi drama. Mary-Louise Parker(!) stars , here, as Zoya Lowe, a quantum physicist, who finds herself stuck in a time loop, endlessly reliving what seem to be the last days of her life, since she has a black hole growing inside her, that could kill her. As Zoya becomes exhausted, trying to figure out how to survive, she meets a gifted student, Paula, (Ayo Edibiri ( !), who may have the answer. So the pair figure out a way to go back in time, and finish Zoya’s research from Princeton, which may help them find an alternative path through time, where Zoya could survive. Ayo Edebiri, Hannah Pearl Utt, Carlos Jacott and Harris Yulin also star, and Bernardo Britto directed. And this movie premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, where it was nominated for Narrative Spotlight, and gets an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Stephen Saito of Variety said “time may unravel in Omni Loop, but admirably, it opens up the space to think less about the secrets of the larger universe than to take stock of the smaller ones that exist around us.” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has added Inheritance Detective, a 2025 Japanese mystery series. Here, Nao Haie (Eiji Akaso), a former lawyer turned detective, working to investigate inheritance disputes. And, though was expelled from the bar for mysterious reasons, he is still able to use his legal expertise to solve some thorny disputes, like the one that took place after a mystery writer’s death. As the author left a video will, which is not valid in court, Haie must search for clues in the writer’s family, which abound, and solve the mysteries that lie in his own past. Hiyori Sakurada, Masanobu Takashima and Mayumi Tanaka also star, and there is one episode available now, with more to come. And it gets an incredible 7.7/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times says “with its engaging narrative, compelling lead, and intriguing cases, this series stands out as one of the most captivating mystery dramas in recent years.” And I love a mystery, so I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix has also added Dhoom Dhaam, a 2024 Indian romcom thriller. This begins on the honeymoon of veterinarian Dr Veer(Pratik Gandhi), and his new wife, Koyal Chaddha(Yami Gautam). As their’s is an arranged marriage, the couple is just getting to know each other, when intruders burst into their hotel room with guns. As Koyal and Veer are bewildered about their pursuers want, they momentarily elude them, but know its only temporary. And so they go on a long chase through the night, with the pair getting to know each other on the run, and not necessarily always liking what they see. Eijaz Khan, Neelu Kohli and Prateik Babbar also star, while Rishab Seth directs. And this movie gets a 6.6/10 on IMDb, and Archika Khurana of The Times of India says “with its right twist and turns and sudden gun giggles on their wedding night, makes for a brilliant watch. The film is filled with genuinely hilarious scenes and dialogues.” So its on my list. But Netflix also offers I Am Married…But! , a 2025 Taiwanese romcom series. This considers the marriage of Lin I-Ling(Alice Ko) and Zeng Xue-you, five years after their whirlwind courtship and marriage. But now some of the romance is beginning to wear off now, especially as the couple still lives with Zeng‘s mother, and I-ling is sick of the arrangement, along with Zeng’s being a momma’s boy. So when she meets a handsome pharmacist, Liu Wen-chieh, the marriage may be stretched beyond its limits. Virginia Chien, Samantha Shu-Chin Ko and Meng-Po Fu also star, and there are 12 episodes available now. And this series gets an astonishing 7.7/10 on IMDb, and Sandeep of A’arcflick calls it a ‘must watch.’ So I’m watching. Netflix also offers Melo Movie, a 2025 Kdrama romcom series. This revolves around Kim Mu-bee(Park Bo-young) and Ko Gyeum(Choi Woo-shik), a former couple whose bitterness is all that remains for them. So when their paths meet again, with Mu-bee a film director and Gyeum a movie critic, it makes for anything but a peaceful coexistence. As Gyeum eviscerates Mu-bee‘s movies, she wonders what she ever saw in him, and then when they find themselves neighbors, the gloves really come off. Lee Jun-young, Jeon So-nee, Kim Jae-uck and Ko Chang-seok also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets a whopping 9.1/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of Lesiurebyte calls it “a beautiful showcase of love, longing and the power of film…a playful and joyous watch with a lot of pent-up emotions.” And I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Nodame Cantabile, a 2014 Japanese romantic comedy/drama series. This follows two students at the Momogaoka College of Music, one- Shinichi Chiaki(Hiroshi Tamaki), highly talented but insecure and a bundle of phobias and insecurities, and the other, Megumi ‘Nodame’ Noda (Juri Ueno) , an equally talented, if unorthodox, and confident, piano player. When the two opposites become friends, drawn together by their love of music, they find themselves reforming their own lives, and becoming better people. And maybe even falling in love. Keisuke Koide, Asami Mizukawa and Eita Nagayama also star, and there are 11 episodes available now. And this series won Best Director and Best Series at the Seoul International Drama Awards. And it gets a smashing 8.3/10 on IMDb, and Anjali Sharma of the Midgard Times says it “offers a delightful exploration of personal growth, the complexities of relationships, and the unifying power of music.” And I’m watching
AMAZON
Amazon’s big title added this week is My Fault: London, a 2025 romance. Based on a Spanish book and blockbuster series Culpa Mia, this finds 18 year-old American Noah(Asha Banks) moving with her mom, Ella (Eve Macklin) to London, upon her mom’s marriage to British billionaire William. But then, Noah meets William’s arrogant son, Nick (Matthew Broome), and the pair fighting continually but, slowly, their hatred morphs into attraction, of course, and their steamy affair begins. But Noah has secrets lingering in her background, and Nick’s criminal involvement puts them both in danger, not to mention their perilous pastime of racing cars down the streets of London. Jason Flemyng, Sam Buchanan, Seosaimhin Hennelly and Tallulah Evans also star, and Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood co-direct. But this movie doesn’t do justice to the original Culpa Mia(also on Amazon). And so, while it gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb, it also gets lot of bad reviews, like that of Courtney Howard of Variety says “this English-language version plays as if a teen Jackie Collins wrote an illicit romance between two cantankerous step-siblings set in the worlds of The Fast and the Furious and Never Back Down. If that sounds chaotically messy, it’s because it is.” So I’m not watching. Better to watch the original Culpa Mia, here , if you want steamy action. Luckily, Amazon also has Newtopia, a 2025 zombie K-drama comedy series. this finds the relationship of Jae-yoon(Park Jeong-min), an older military recruit, and his girlfriend, Kang Young-joo ( Kim Jisoo), on the rocks, when a misunderstanding leads to a final breakup. But then hordes of zombies arrive, and Jae-yoon is frantic, not just at the undead swarming the city, but the thought that his loved one, Young-joo, is alone and unprotected. So he sets out to find and protect her, even if he’s not totally successful. Im Sung-jae,Hong Seo-hee and Tang Jun-sang also star, and there are 3 episodes available now. And this series gets an impressive 7/10 on IMDb, and Sarah Musnicky of But Why Tho? says it ” start[s] things off with a bang. This rom-com zombie apocalypse nightmare, in its inaugural episodes, shows us a glimpse of the madness coming to our eyeballs.” So I am definitely tuning in. And, finally, Amazon has added The Mehta Boys, a 2025 Indian Hindi language drama. Here, young Mumbai architect Amay(Avinash Tiwary) is shocked by the death of his mother, in their hometown. But when he travels back for the funeral, things get worse, for he must send time with his irascible dad, Shiv Mehta(Boman Irani), with whom he does not get along. Worse, his dad is to move to America to live with Amay’s sister in 48 hours, but has no place to stay, until then. And so the pair travel back to Mumbai, to spend 2 uninterrupted days together, whether they like it or not. Shreya Chaudhry, Flora Jacob and Puja Sarup also star , while Boman Irani directs, along with playing a leading role, here. And this movie won Best Fiction Feature at the 2024 Chicago South Asian Film Festival, and gets an amazing 7.4/10 on IMDb, and Abhimanyu Mathur of Hindustan Times said “Boman Irani‘s directorial debut is a splendid film anchored by his performance as well as a class act from Avinash Tiwary.” So I’m tuning in.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
