Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has an amazing add this week with Ghost Light, the 2024 award-winning comedy drama. This tells of a family rocked by an unspoken tragedy, with father Dan (Keith Kupferer), a construction worker, repressed and unhappy, until his daughter Daisy(Katherine Mallen Kupferer), begins getting into trouble. When she is suspended from school, she starts therapy, anxiously asking him to come, too, to no avail. But then Dan stumbles upon a local theater production of Romeo and Juliet, and walk inside. As he secretly joins the cast, and is suspiciously absent at home, Daisy, and her mom, Sharon, become worried. But then Daisy surreptitiously follows him, and finds herself acting in the play, too. And that may be the therapy the family needs. Tara Mallen, Dolly De Leon and Hanna Dworkin also star, while Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson co-directed. And this movie premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and Kupferer won Best Actor at the 2025 Satellite Awards, and Kupferer also won Best Actor and Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson won Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival. and it gets an astounding 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Katie Walsh of the Tribune News Service called it “a beautifully life-affirming fable about the power of art to heal, but really, it’s the people making the art that do the work. Ghostlight is a stunning and incredibly moving tribute to that process.” and I’m definitely tuning in. Hulu also offers Shared Custody, a 2025 Disney+ Spanish dramedy series. This finds Cris(Lorena López) and Diego(Richard Farré), a married couple more than ready for a divorce. As they proceed, they vow to remain civil and amicable, for the sake of their 5 year-old daughter, Cloe(Lucia de Gracia). But things quickly deteriorate, as bitterness and resentment overflow, and their fighting intensifies. And with money tight, they both have to move in with their parents, which definitely doesn’t help. But as Cloe begins to show signs of strain and anxiety, can the two parents clean up their act, for the sake of their daughter? Francesc Orella, Adriana Ozores, Aten Soria and Cristina Alcázar also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.4/10 on IMDb, and Cinemagavia says its “well executed thanks to a script that mixes everyday conflicts with witty dialogue.” And I’m watching. Hulu also offers Posso Entrare? An Ode To Naples, a 2023 documentary. Here, Trudie Styler takes us on a journey through Naples, but not just a scenic one, but one that delves more into the depths of poverty and organized crime. She also revisits the effects of Fascism and WWII on Neapolitan residents, like Nora Liello, a 90 year-old who remembers Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini touring the city. She also remembers how the Neapolitans ousted the Nazis from their city without allied help at the end of the war, and the calamitous erupting of Vesuvius in that killed 1200 people. And she talks to people from all walks of life, like a priest trying to help the youth avoid becoming involved with the Camorra mafia, and a woman with the Forti Guerriere, an association working to stop domestic abuse, and violence against women. Trudie Styler, wife of Sting, wrote and directed this documentary, that won Best Documentary (Migliore Documentario) at the 2024 Italian Golden Globes, and Capri European Documentary Award at the 2023 Capri, Hollywood Awards. And it gets an incredible 7.5/10 on IMDb, so even though I can find no critical reviews online, I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has Black Ops, a 2023 British comedy series. Here, Dom(Gbemisola Ikumelo) and Kay(Hammed Animashaun) join as community members of the Greater London Police in the hopes of helping their neighborhood, but, instead, find themselves assigned to undercover work. Though they protest they’re not hip or ‘street,’ DI Clinton Blair proceeds to assign them to undercover work with drug gangs on the Brightmarsh estate. But then the bullets start to fly, and a police officer ends up dead, and this pair of novices may be in over their heads. Ariyon Bakare, Akemnji Ndifornyen and Jaz Hutchins also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this hilarious series won Gbemisola Ikumelo won Comedy Performance – Female, and Hammed Animashaun won Comedy Performance – Male at the Royal Television Society, and Ikumelo won Female Performance in a Comedy Programme at the prestigious BAFTA awards. And gets a 6.5/10 on IMDb, and Rachel Aroesti of the Guardian called it a “series about feckless community support officers infiltrating a drug gang is a pitch-perfect, star-packed joy. It spotlights racism while being a brilliantly fresh farce.” And I am so tuning in.
NETFLIX
The big title added on Netflix this week is probably Running Point, a 2025 romantic comedy series. Kate Hudson(!) plays Isla Gordon, here, a former party girl who inherits the leadership of the family Basketball team, the Waves, after her brother Cam‘s car accident. But she faces nothing but jokes and disdain, called both a nepo baby and a “nepo crone” by from the team’s staff and others. So Isla has to find the determination and tough skin to lead the team and disregard the insults that usually target a woman in power, all while having a lot of fun. But will her engagement to Lev Levenson(Max Greenfield) be threatened when she is tempted by the head coach, Jay Brown(Jay Ellis)? Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Justin Theroux and Fabrizio Guido also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but as Nandini Balial of RogerEbert.com says “for a show hellbent on whitewashing the clearly sociopathic behaviors of sports team owners, Running Point is frequently funny.” But I’d rather watch Toxic Town, a 2025 British drama series. Based on a true story, this tells of an alarmingly high rate of birth defects of children born in Corby, a former steel town in the Midlands of England. When women like Susan McIntyre(Jodie Whittaker!) , who found herself pregnant in the 90‘s. Delighted with the prospects of a new family member, she and her husband are shocked when their son is born without fingers on one hand. Other mothers in the area have similar experiences or worse, with some newborns dying . But when senior engineer Ted Jenkins’ (Stephen McMillan) finds high levels of toxins in the soil, the town council is not moved to act. And the women already traumatized by the situation are left to sue the city to act, having to spend years in litigation, to get the city to act. Aimee Lou Wood, Rory Kinnear, Robert Carlyle and Brendan Coyle(Downton Abbey!) also star, and there are 4 episodes available now. And this series gets an astounding 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.8/10 on IMDb. And Joel Keller of the Decider calls it “an intense but entertaining watch thanks mainly to fine performances by Whitaker and Wood, but also because Thorne paints a compelling picture of a town trying to revive itself while ignoring the dangers that lurk underneath it.” So I’m watching. Netflix has also added Dalah: Death and the Flowers, a 2025 Thai crime series. Here, Dalah(Urassaya Sperbund) is hired to supply flowers for a prestigious wedding involving a candidate for Prime Minister of Thailand, Anusorn “Ohm” Uathepa . But when Ohm turns up dead at Dalah‘s ransacked shop on the eve of his wedding, the florist decides to look into the murder herself. And though she has some pretty unusual techniques, like listening to flowers, she might actually end up solving the case. Chayanit Chansangavej, Naphat Vikairungroj, Vachirawich Wattanapakdeepaisan, Ron Banjongsang and Amarin Nitibhon also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.7/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of LeisureByte.com calls it “a bit obvious but still decently entertaining.” And I love a mystery, so I’m watching. Netflix also offers Watcher, the 2022 psychological thriller. Here, Julia(Maika Monroe!) and her husband Francis (Karl Glusman) move to Bucharest, while a serial killer stalks women in the city . Disoriented and lonely, and not knowing the language, Julia wanders the city, but she has a feeling of being watched. A man stands at the window in the apartment across the street, giving her the creeps, and when she goes to the movies, she thinks she glimpses him behind her. Her reports to her husband are dismisses as her imagination, or worse(she’s crazy), and as Julia is hobbled by insomnia, she wonders at the reality of what she sees, and fears for her life. With no one to depend upon, but herself. Burn Gorman, Madalina Anea and Aida Economu also star, and Chloe Okuno directed. And this movie was nominated for numerous awards in 2023 , and went on to win Best First Feature at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and Best Feature at the Boston Underground Film Festival. And it gets 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times said “this beautifully crafted jewel of a throwback thriller signifies Okuno as a talent to watch, but furthermore, it pushes the viewer to question what, and who, we choose to believe and why.” And I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Dabba Cartel, a 2025 crime drama series. This tells of 5 Mumbai women who start a tiffin, or dabba, service who slowly get drawn into the drug trade, smuggling it in the lunch tins. But they flounder at smuggling, and fear the mob pressures, so Sheila (Shabana Azmi) takes the reins from her daughter-in-law, Raji (Shalini Pandey). But can they survive the underworld environment, or even escape it? Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Jyothika, Nimisha Sajayan and Anjali Anand also star, and there are 7 episodes available now. And this series gets an impressive 7.1/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of LeisureByte called it “extremely entertaining in a nonsensical way and I found myself oddly hooked throughout its runtime.” And I’m watching.
AMAZON
Amazon has few new adds this week, but they do have The Commoner, a 2025 Norwegian drama series. Also called Harald og Sonja, and based on a true story, this tells of Crown Prince Harald(Sindre Strand) of Norway, and his romance with commoner Sonja Haraldsen(Gina Bernhoft Gørvell). When they met in the 60‘s, and fell in love, it was unconstitutional for the prince to marry a (gasp!) commoner , and so the Prince had to battle for 9 years for the right to marry the woman he chose. He had to gain the permission of King Olaf(Anders Baasmo) for the right to marry, with finally only his threats to abdicate, changing the King‘s mind. Aurora Nossen, Meadhbh Maxwell and Anneke von der Lippe also star, and there are 4 episodes available now. And this series gets a stunning 7.9/10 on IMDb, so, though there are no online reviews as yet, I am definitely tuning in. Amazon also offers Becoming Katharine Graham, a 2025 documentary. This tells the story of the renowned newspaper owner Katharine Graham, one of the first women to break the glass ceiling in the newspaper industry. She took the helm in 1963, after her husband’s suicide, and went on to handle the paper with vigor and authority, after the white male board ignored her at meetings, for the 1st year. She published the Pentagon Papers, without bowing to governmental pressures, and brought the paper through a strike in 1975. And of course, she was the publisher during the Watergate Scandal, printing the famed stories of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, risking the wrath of the Nixon administration. And we get a lot of first hand accounts, with Graham narrating her own stories, from her 1997 autobiography, and modern day interviews with Woodward and Bernstein, Gloria Steinem, and daughter Lally Weymouth. And co-directors(and siblings) George and Teddy Kunhardt bring it all together in a compelling and inspiring tale of overcoming adversity. So, though it has no rating on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes, yet, it gets rave reviews, like that of Anne Brodie of What She Said, who says “what a woman! What a story! I wonder why it took so long for such a film to be made on this hero?” And I am watching,..twice!! And, finally, Amazon offers Season 1 of Alice Nevers, a French mystery series from the Mhz Choice channel. This follows investigating judge Alice Nevers(Marine Delterme), who investigates murders in Paris with police captain Fred Marquand (Jean-MichelTinivelli). As the season begins, Nevers is returning from maternity leave, and the pair set out to investigate the murder of a real estate agent. and they go on to investigate a myriad array of cases, from a murdered priest to a pop star killed after a nursing home performance. Guillaume Carcaud, Gary Mihaileanu and Fabienne Carat also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets an astounding 7.6/10 on IMDb, so though I can find no online reviews for this show, I am tuning in. And you know I love a mystery.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
