Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a super add this week with Deli Boys, a 2025 dark comedy/crime series. This finds two spoiled, rich Pakistani American brothers Mir(Asif Ali) and Raj Dar(Saagar Shaikh), shocked by death of their baba or father, who owned a string of convenience stores in the Delaware Valley. But they’re even more surprised when their Lucky Auntie (Poorna Jagannathan) shoots someone in front of their eyes, and then informs them of the true nature of their father’s business. It seems that their dad and auntie dealt drugs , cocaine, to be exact, under the convenience store cover. And as Lucky Auntie and other family members vie over the helm of the business, the brothers get sucked into the mess, with the FBI hot on their tails. Alfie Fuller, Brian George(!) and Alexandra Ruddy and Chris Elliott(!) also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets an astonishing 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Robert Lloyd of the L.A. Times called it “smartly written, festooned with quirky business, farcical situations, droll asides. Above all, it’s built on great performances, even in the smallest roles, that ground the wackiness and so make things only funnier.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Hulu has also added Missing from Fire Trail Road, a 2024 documentary. This tells the search for Mary Ellen Johnson-Davis, a Native American woman who disappeared from Tulalip Indian reservation near Seattle, in 2020. With the investigation stalled, even though Mary‘s husband vanished a few days after her disappearance with a large sum of money from her estate, Mary’s sisters and other tribal members act to get recognition for their sister, and the thousands of indigenous American women who go missing every year. And as the FBI drags it feet to investigate, Tribal governments are not appallingly allowed to investigate criminal activity by non-Native people, i.e. whites, which in turn, makes reservations a ‘haven for murderers and rapists,’ says one expert. So Native peoples in Washington(and elsewhere) protest for the rights and humanity of Native American women. And director Sabrina Van Tassel thoughtfully brings this message home in this movie that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. And this it gets an stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Jennie Kermode of Eye for Film said “layering together past and present, Van Tassel weaves a rich tapestry which illustrates the multiple elements of complicity in Mary Ellen’s disappearance.” And I am so watching. Hulu has also added The Gutter, a 2024 comedy. Shameik Moore stars, here, as Walt, a perennially out-of-work guy who finds his passion when he finds a job at a his aunt’s bowling alley. He also finds an ally in his friend ,Skunk (D’Arcy Carden !), who offers him somewhat questionable advice. But Walt also finds a enemy, when he set his sights on dethroning the chain smoking, retired bowling legend Linda Curson (Susan Sarandon), who comes back to to show the neophyte her stuff. Rell Battle, Adam Brody, Paul Reiser and Kim Fields also star, and Isaiah Lester and Yassir Lester co-direct. And this movie gets a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter said “The Gutter— like an early Paul Beatty novel — seems destined to be a cult classic.” And I’m tuning in. And, finally, Hulu has added Buried Hearts, a 2025 K-drama revenge series. Here, Seo Dong-ju(Park Hyung-sik) , a corporate secretary at the Daesan Group, hacks into a slush fund, and steals millions of dollars. His employers are shaken by the disloyalty of their seemingly trusted employee, but Dong-jo is motivated by more than just greed. And as the powerful Yeom Jangseon(Huh Joon-ho) plans to get have Dong-ju killed, Dong-ju has revenge of his own in mind, and may take the whole company down. Lee Hae-young, Hong Hwa-yeon and Hong Hwa-yeon also star, and there are 4 episodes available now. And this series gets an outrageous 7.9/10 on IMDb, and Bhavna Agarwal of India Today says it “will captivate viewers with its blend of intense emotions and high-stakes drama.” So I’m watching.
NETFLIX
Netflix has an exciting add with The Leopard, a 2025 Italian historical epic limited series. Based on the book of the same name by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, this takes place in 1860, with Garibaldi and the Red Shirts threatening to invade Sicily, as part of the Italian unification. But Don Fabrizio Corbera(Kim Rossi Stuart), Prince of Salina, will not resign his status or his riches easily and so, will go to astonishing lengths(or depths) to keep his stronghold. But who in his family will pay? Benedetta Porcaroli, Francesco Colella, Astrid Meloni and Marcus Marcelli also star, and there are 6 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets an amazing 7.2/10 on IMDb, and Rachel Aroesti of the Guardian says it “will leave you swooning,” adding “this version is more coherent and watchable, without ever being sugary or simplistic.” And I am definitely tuning in. Netflix also offers Just One Look, a 2025 Polish Harlan Coben mystery series. Greta Rembiewska (Maria Debska) is a woman traumatized by a club fire 15 years ago, that she alone survived, though she’s now living happily with her husband and 2 children. Then she discovers a mysterious photo, seemingly of her husband Jacek Lawniczak (Cezary Lukazewicz), and shows it to him, only to have him disappear, hours later. Though she is horrified at the possibilities, she proceeds to search for Jacek, only to be approached by prosecutor Borys Gajewicz (Miroslaw Zbrojewicz), who lost his daughter in the club fire, and wants Greta’s help. But are the two incidents connected? Andrzej Zelinski, Marta Malikowska and Piotr Stramowski also star and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, adding it “has enough twists and turns to keep viewers on the hook, especially given the fact that the total running time of the series is probably around four hours.” And I love a mystery, so it’s on my list. Netflix has also added the award-winning drama How to Have Sex, a 2023 British coming-of-age drama. This follows three British teen girls, Tara(Mia McKenna-Bruce), Em (Enva Lewis), Skye(Lara Peake) as they head for a school break holiday in Crete, ready for excitement. Drinking and swimming ensue, but all the girls are hyped for sex, which leaves Tara, the only virgin, under intense scrutiny and pressure. When she finally does the deed, with a guy chosen for her, the results hit her hard, isolating her from the rest of everyone around her. Anna Antoniades, Shaun Thomas and Daisy Jelley also star, and Molly Manning Walker directed and wrote the script, here. And this movie won tons of awards in 2024 , including Best Lead Performance for McKenna-Bruce at the British Independent Film Awards, Best Director at the Stockholm Film Festival, and Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival. And it gets an astounding 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle said “if you have an idealized memory of your teenage years, see this movie to remember what it was actually like.” And I’m watching. Netflix also offers The Potato Lab, 2025 K-drama romcom series. This finds the world of Kim Mi-kyung(Lee Sun-bin), a potato researcher at Sunnyeo Food , turned upside down when her company is taken over by Wonhan Retail. And when the officious Wonhon Director Baek-ho(Kang Tae-oh) comes to town to complete the takeover, Mi-kyung is digusted, but when he actually becomes her next-door neighbor, the gloves come off. Lee Hak-ju, Kim Ga-eun, Shin Hyeon-Seung and Yoo Seung-mok also star, and there are 3 episodes available now, with 10 more to come. And this series gets a outlandish 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Sarah Musnicky of But Why Tho? says “don’t let its oddly boring and generic title fool you. The Potato Lab holds lots of promise, and with what we can see so far, it is likely to be the sleeper hit series of the season.” So I’m tuning in. And, finally Netflix has added When Life Gives You Tangerines, a 2025 k-drama historical romance series. This tells the story of Ae-soon(played by IU), a brilliant young woman who grows up on Jeju Island in the 60′s, where women like her mom are Haenyeo, deep sea divers who hunt abalone and seaweed. But the poverty and inequity are too much for Ae-soon, and so she speaks out often. And she dreams of getting off the island, and marrying someone from Seoul whereas Gwan-sik, her friend born on the island , is poor. But as Ae-soon aspires to leave the island, and escape the hard scrabble life of the island, will she leave all those she loves behind? Moon So-ri and Park Hae-joon play the older Ae-sun and Gwan-sik, andYeom Hye-ran, Lee Cheon-mu and Kim Yong-rim also star, and there are 4 episodes available now, with 12 more to come. And this series gets an whopping 9.2/10 on IMDb, and Pierce Conran of the South China Morning Post says “this is at heart an intimate and simple story, but one that is beautifully penned, exquisitely performed and vividly realised.” And I am definitely tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon biggest title added this week is Picture This, a 2025 romcom. This is a remake of last year’s Five Blind Dates, and tells of photographer Pia (Simone Ashley of Bridgerton!), living in London, with her businesslosing money. And with the wedding of her younger sister, Sonal (Anoushka Chadha) coming up , its already a stressful time for Pia, with no current boyfriend. But then her mother, Laxmi (Sindhu Vee) turns up the heat, by offering Pia the family jewels, but only if she marries within 30 days. So she will go on 5 blind dates, her family sets up, and hopefully, find the man of her dreams by the 5th one. Only trouble is, her ex-boyfriend Charlie, appears on the scene, throwing a monkey wrench into the works. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Asim Chaudhry, Luke Fetherston and Nikesh Patel also star, and Prarthana Mohan directs. And though this movie gets but a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, Courtney Howard of Variety calls it “sweet, silly and sincere, director Prarthana Mohan’s spin has a clear understanding of what makes its source material revelatory and resonant.” You decide. I’d rather watch The Universal Theory, a 2023 German mystery/thriller. This black and white movie takes place in 1962, at a quantum mechanics conference at an isolated lodge in the Swiss Alps, which young physicist, Johannes, attend with his mentor, Dr. Julius Strathen (Hanns Zischler). As Johannes advances his multiverse theory of physics to anyone who will listen, he falls under the spell of a pianist, Karin (Olivia Ross), who seems to know everything about him, though they’ve never met before. But then the murders begin, and as people whisper secrets to him of the lodge, and hidden tunnels under the resort, and other sinister things to be avoided, Johannes tries to solve the crimes. Gottfried Breitfuss, Philippe Graber and Imogen Kogge also star, and Timm Kröger directs. And this movie was nominated for numerous awards in 2023, and went on to win Best Motion Picture at the Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival and the Bisato d’Oro at the Venice Film Festival. And it gets a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Philip De Semlyen of Time Out said “this wonderfully slippery Hitchcockian sci-fi is an elegant puzzle box full of ingenious ideas.” And I’m watching. And, finally, Amazon has added The Problem with People, a 2024 comedy. Colm Meaney stars as Ciáran, here, an Irishman who locates his long lost American cousin, Barry(Paul Reiser), and invites him to Ireland, at the behest of his dying father, Fergus (Des Keough). Everything goes smoothly, though Barry, a real estate tycoon, and Ciáran, a local undertaker don’t mix well, but then Fergus dies, and leaves a surprisingly generous behest to Barry. Which Ciáran resents, and so a battle of epic proportions begins. Lucianne McEvoy, Bernadette Carty and Jane Levy also star, and Chris Cottam directs. And this movie gets a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Sean McGeady of the Radio Times said its a “tourist-board tale painted in broad strokes, The Problem with People is sentimental, but likeable all the same.” And I’m tuning in.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
