Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has some big adds this week, like the FX series Adults, a 2025 comedy series. This revolves around a group of 20-something friends, staying at the Queens home of Samir (Malik Elassal), or rather, his parents’ home. There’s Billie(Lucy Freyer), an over-achiever, now working to find her footing, and friends Issa (Amita Rao) and Anton (Owen Thiele), too. Then there’s Issa’s boyfriend, Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), is always around. And amid the chaos, they struggle with work and relationships, getting adults to take them seriously, and adulting, in general. Will Ropp, D’Arcy Carden(!) and Charlie Cox (!) also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And this series gets a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Karl Quinn of The Age (Australia) calls it hilarious, unhinged, and has plenty to say, for the adults and their elders alike.” So I’m tuning in. But Hulu has an even more exciting add with The Seed of the Sacred Fig, the 2024 Iranian award-winning drama. This tells the story of Iman (Missagh Zareh) and his wife Najmeh (Soheila Golestani) , after Iman has been named to be an investigating judge in the Revolutionary Court of Iran. Iman is pleased, and his wife Najmeh is overjoyed with the auspicious new position, but soon the excitement fades. For Iman is asked to rubberstamp severe sentences for offenders, with no investigation at all, and pressure from the prosecutors and the government is overwhelming. And his daughters, 21-year-old Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and teen Sana (Setareh Maleki) see the court differently, as a crushing blow to the protests in the streets and aiding in the violent repression of dissidents. But as Iman objects to the restrictions of his position and the interference of the government, he finds his own safety, and that of his family, imperiled. Setareh Abdolmaleki, Niousha Akhshi Vardoogh, and Reza Akhlaghirad also star, while Mohammad Rasoulof directed. And this movie was nominated for tons of awards last year, and won 5 at the Cannes Film Festival, including Jury Special Prize, Fipresci Award and the François Chalais Award, won Best Film at the 2024 Haifa International Film Festival, and the Lumiere Award for Best International Coproduction at the 2025 Lumiere Awards. And it gets a stunning 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Roxana Hadadi of New York Magazine/Vulture said it “is a political thriller, a horror movie, and an ode to that unrepentance. The boldness of Iranian girls and women is its inspiration and its essence.” And I am so tuning in. Hulu has also added How to Please a Woman, a 2022 Australian comedy-drama film. Here, after Gina Henderson (Sally Phillips) finds herself sacked from her job, she finds herself at a crosssroads. So, when a friend sends a male sex worker to her door for her 50th birthday, and Gina has him clean her house, instead, she comes up with a new idea for the sex worker’s failing moving company. She converts it to a cleaning service, done by shirtless men, who may throw in a few extras, if the customer wants. And she finds herself examining her own life, and her rather sexless marriage. Erik Thomson, Alexander England, Ryan Johnson and Caroline Brazier also star, and Renée Webster directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2022, and went on to win Best Narrative Feature at the Toronto International Women Film Festival, and Best Feature Film at the West Australian Screen Culture Awards. And it gets a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Wenlei Ma of News.com.au said its “a relatable film that touches on many of the frustrations that plague a generation of women who have been made to feel invisible.” So I’m tuning in. And , finally, Hulu has added the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, a 2025 sci-fi drama series. Here, with not too many spoilers , June(Elizabeth Moss) , and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) seek to escape the terrors of Gilead, heading for Vancouver. But June’s husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle), is still stuck in Gilead, having been arrested there, but June‘s best friend Moira (Samira Wiley) is there to help him out , with the aid of U.S. Government op Mark(Sam Jaeger) . And worry for her family members still stuck in New Bethlehem, brings her back to the fight, for their freedom. Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd and Bradley Whitford(!) also star, and there are 10 season 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a whopping 8.3/10 on IMDb, and Lauren Thoman of TheWrap says “is eminently bingeable, and each episode is tightly paced, with at least a few standout dramatic moments in each.” And more relevant than ever, so I’m definitely tuning in.

Netflix has Dept. Q, a 2025 British crime drama series. Matthew Goode(!) stars, here, as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, traumatized and guilt ridden after his partner was shot , who is forced to create Dept. Q. As the department consists of only himself, and is stuck in the basement, Morck is less than pleased, but he perseveres. Then, as he gains an assistant, Akram Salim(Alexej Manvelov), and Rose(Leah Byrne), the team investigate a missing prosecutor, and make considerable headway. But will their results just get them in more trouble with the powers that be? Chloe Pirrie, Jamie Sives, Mark Bonnar and Kelly Macdonald also star, and there are 9 episodes available now. And this series, created by Scott Frank(The Queen’s Gambit!) gets an astounding 8.1/10 on IMDb, and Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly calls it “grumpy perfection in chilling crime drama. ” And I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix has also added Forget You Not, a 2025 Taiwanese comedy series. This series revolves around Cheng Le-le (Hsieh Ying-hsuan), whose life is demanding enough, working as a cashier ,trying to sustain her rocky marriage, and start a career as a comedian. But then her father, Cheng Kuang-chi(Chin Han), is diagnosed with early onset dementia, and Le-le’s burden becomes even greater. As she steps in as her dad’s caregiver, her relationship with him is sometimes tenuous, but through their journey, they become closer. But Le-le‘s marriage still hangs in the balance, and her stand-up comedy routine may be her only chance of surviving the turmoil. Wallace Huo, Esther Liu, Tracy Chou and Chen Yi-wen also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. Adn this series gets an impressive 7.8/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of Leisure Byte says “emotionally devastating and memorable.” So I’m watching. Netflix also offers A Widow’s Game, a 2025 Spanish mystery. Based on a true story, this tells of the murder of a man in a parking garage, his body found by police, and Detective Eva Torres(Carmen Machi) enters the scene to investigate. But this doesn’t look like a robbery gone bad, and so Eva meets his widow, Maje(Ivana Baquero). As she observes her behavior, Eva becomes suspicious, and then we begin to see more of Maje’s story, and finally that of her husband, Antonio. And as the story fills out, it becomes devastatingly obvious who the killer is. Tristán Ulloa, Pablo Molinero and Joel Sánchez also star, while Carlos Sedes directed. And this gets a 6.1/10 on IMDb, and John Serba of the Decider says to stream it adding “reasonably absorbing in a how-will-this-turn-out plot-driven sense, and its most compelling moments occur during the sharply honed procedural elements of Eva’s portion of the story.” And I agree, Eva is one great study of a detective, so I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers Mad Unicorn, a 2025 Thai limited revenge-drama series. This tells the story of Santi (Natara Nopparatayapon), determined to make good, after growing up poor, and having his ideas for a new startup stolen by a rich investor, Kanin(Ek-Thaneth Warakulnukroh). So from then on, Santi is intent on making himself a success, and a millionaire too, at whatever the cost. Janeyeh Jiranorraphat, Dr. Palang Rocksilp, Pachara Chirathivat and Thassapak Hsu also star, and there are 7 episodes available now. And this series gets an outrageous 8.7/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times calls it a “must-watch for audiences Interested in entrepreneurship.” So it’s on my list. And, finally, Netflix has added Our Unwritten Seoul, a 2025 K-drama series. This revolves around two identical twin sisters, Yu Mi-Rae and Yu Mi-ji, both well played by Park Bo-young. And while Mi-rae appears to have a charmed life, working in finance, Mi-ji does gig work, after an ankle injury ended her athletic career. But Mi-rae‘s life is far from perfect, with high pressure and bullying at work driving her to the breaking point. And so the two switch places, and Mi-ji takes her place in the business world, while Mi-rae takes any work she can in her sister’s place, even on a farm. If she can manage learning to ride a bike. Hyun Ok-hee, Kim Sun-young, Kim Mi-kyung and Ryu Kyung-soo also star, and there are 3 episodes available now, with 9 more to come. And this series gets a smashing 8.6/10 on IMDb, and Ayishah Ayat Toma of Gazettely calls it a “timely K-Drama on the search for meaning and self.” And I am definitely tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon‘s big title added this week is The Better Sister, a 2025 thriller series. Based on the novel of the same name by Alafair Burke, this finds two estranged sisters, Chloe (Jessica Biel) and Nicky (Elizabeth Banks), thrown in a maelstrom when Chloe’s husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), is found murdered, by Chloe, on her living room floor. The investigation, led by Detective Nancy Guidry(Kim Dickens), soon leads to Chloe’s sister Nicky, when it is revealed that Nicky was previously Adam’s wife, and the mother of the teen now living with Chloe, Ethan. While Nicky is trying to stay sober, and rise above the childhood trauma that besieged both sisters, Chloe is dedicated to perfection, never a hair out of place, or an emotion expressed. So the question is, who did the deed? Maxwell Acee Donovan, Gabriel Sloyer and Matthew Modine(!) also star, and there are 8 juicy episodes available now. And this series gets a respectable 6.8/10 on IMDb, and Thelma Adams of TheWrap calls it “tantalizing,” adding “the fun is in watching Biel and Banks stretch out and strut in complicated roles with ample opportunity to demonstrate their acting chops.” Amazon has also added The Fire Inside, a 2024 biographical drama. This tells the true story of boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (Ryan Destiny), a two time Olympic gold medalist and her coach, Jason Crutchfield (Bryan Tyree Henry). Growing up in Flint, Michigan, Claressa faced the adversity of a troubled home, with her mom’s addiction, poverty, and abuse, with even Coach Crutchfield refusing to train her. But he soon relented and the pair built a relationship that led not only to a great boxing career, but also more stability and support for Claressa. But even after being a champion, Shields still has to fight the income inequality facing female athletic champions, in a sexist sports world. Olunike Adeliyi, Jazmin Headley, Kylee D. Allen and De’Adre Aziza also star, and Rachel Morrison directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2024, and went on to win Rising Star Award for Ryan Destiny at the Denver Film Festival, and Best New Filmmaker for Morrison and Best First Film for Morrison, too, at the Hawaii Film Critics Society Awards. And this movie gets a shining 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Nell Minow of RogerEbert.com said it “has a spacious generosity toward all of its characters, even Shields’ parents, reflecting her commitment to her family and community, as deep as her focus on winning boxing matches.” And I’m so watching. And, finally, Amazon has Catch the Ghost, a 2019 K-drama mystery series. This finds the Wangsuri Subway Police members thrown for a loop, when a serial killer named The Ghost stalks the subway trains. Used to smaller crimes, but anxious for action, rookie Yoo Ryung(Moon Geun-young), is ready for action, until her autistic twin sister Yoo jin goes missing on the train. As Yoo Ryung goes on a desperate search, her more level-headed partner,Go Ji-seok (Kim Seon-ho), hope to help her find her sister, and The Ghost, too. Jeong Eu-gene, Ki Do-Hoon,Jo Jae-yoon and Kim Jeong-yeong also star, and there are 16 episodes available now. And this series gets an incredible 7.4/10 on IMDb, and so, though I can find no reviews as yet, I’m watching. I love a mystery.
