Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has few big titles added this week, but intriguing smaller ones, like Presence, a 2024 horror flick. This finds the Payne family moving into a new house, but that house is already occupied by restless spirit. Mom Rebecca (Lucy Liu) doesn’t really notice at first, as she’s work-oriented, and less sensitive than her teen daughter Chloe (Callina Liang), who’s just experienced the death of a friend. So, while Chloe senses a presence immediately, her parents are less quick to pick up on it, troubled by marital difficulties and work. But soon, the activity becomes more disruptive and disturbing, and the family is left with the dilemma of how to react. Chris Sullivan, Natalie Woolams-Torres, Julia Fox, and Eddy Maday also star, and Steven Soderbergh(!) directed. And this movie gets an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Coleman Spilde ofSalon.com said “as fascinating as the film is in technical form, it’s screenwriter David Koepp’s script that makes Presence a real draw. His writing is thorny and cuts deceptively deep, like a scrape that looks like a surface wound until it won’t stop bleeding.” So you know it’s too scary for me. Luckily, Hulu also offers The Witch 2: The Other One, a 2022 K-drama horror/sci-fi mash-up. This begins with Girl (Shin Sia-ah) , who has amazing powers, like telekinesis, who is hunted by the group who gave her those powers. She is part of the Witch program run by Dr. Baek(Jo Min-su), who is having his goons search for her everywhere, leaving a path of scorched earth and dead bodies behind them. But she might just survive, with the help of Kyung-hee(Park Eun-bin). And if all this sounds confusing, Hulu has the original The Witch :Subversion here. Seo Eun-su, Jin Goo and Seong Yu-bin also star, and Park Hoon-jung directed. And this gets an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Leslie Felperin of the Guardian said “satire is much less the point than good old-fashioned ass-kicking and special effects, all smoothly executed and doled out in bite-size scenes.” So it’s on my list. Hulu also has Jazzy, a 2022 drama. This tells the story of the adolescence of Jazzy, played by Jasmine Shangreaux, a Lakota girl living in South Dakota, with her best friend, Syriah Fool Head Mean. As Jazzy and Syriah navigate the years from 6 through 12, they not only deal with school and adults, but also the deeper meaning of life, and a growing interest in boys. But most importantly, they deal with the trials and travails of maintaining a friendship that will guide them through their lives and offer them strength. Lily Gladstone(!), Golden Rose and Richard Ray Whitman also star, and Morrisa Maltz directs. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2024, and went on to win Best Performance for Jasmine Shangreaux at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, and Best Director for Maltz at the 2024 Rome Film Fest. And this movie gets an amazing 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Elizabeth Weitzman of TheWrap said “at 80 minutes, the film is both leisurely paced and fully packed, so that when it ends we’ve spent the perfect amount of time with these beautiful girls.” And I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has added I, Addict, a 2024 Disney+Spanish drama series. The story here revolves around Javier Giner(Oriol Pla), a successful marketing executive in Barcelona, who finds his drug and sexual addictions overwhelming. And so, he checks himself into a rehab center, but then finds the difficulty of adjusting to rehab, together with the torture of withdrawal nearly unbearable. But, though it may more than one try, and more than one hospitalization, he becomes committed to not only getting clean, but also being a happier and healthier version of himself. Nora Navas, Catalina Sopelana, Guillem Balart and Andrés Herrera also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series won 2 awards at the 2025 Spanish Actors Union Awards, including Best Male Lead Performance by Pla, and gets a stunning100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Andrew Murray of The Upcoming says “fuelled by a spectacular performance by Pla, I, Addict is a monumentally powerful depiction of addiction.” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has a big add with The Survivors, a 2025 Australian crime drama series. Based on a novel of the same name by Jane Harper, this tells the town of Evelyn Bay, roiled by the death of two teenage boys fifteen years ago. So when the sole survivor of that accident, Kieran(Charlie Vickers), returns to town , rumor and misinformation erupt. As Kieran’s brother was killed in the accident, shame kept him away from home, but his father’s dementia brought him back. But his mom still blames him, as do other townspeople, but when Bronte(Shannon Berry) starts digging into the death of a third person that night, people become uneasy. And then when Bronte turns up dead , the town is in an uproar, and fear prevails. Yerin Ha, Robyn Malcolm, Damien Garvey, Thom Green and George Mason also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 5.7/10 on IMDb, but rave reviews, like that of Lucy Mangan of the Guardian, who calls it “ a murder mystery so intense you’ll find yourself watching through your fingers.” So I’m definitely tuning in.Netflix also offers Straw, a 2025 drama from Tyler Perry. Taraji P. Henson(!) stars, here, as Janiyah , an overworked single mom, who has a horrible morning that includes a bullying landlord, a mean boss, and her daughter taken from her. So when she goes to cash her paycheck at her bank, and the teller won’t accept it without her (forgotten) ID, Janiyah loses it, and pulls out a gun. As she takes hostages, the bank manager, Nicole, tries to defuse the situation , seeing Janiyah is overwrought. And the police detective Detective Kay Raymond(Teyana Taylor) tries to tease out the answer for Janiyah‘s snapping. Sherri Shepherd, Sinead, Rockmond Dunbar and Gabby Jackson also star, and Tyler Perry wrote the script here, along with directing. And Straw gets a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Dennis Harvey of Variety calls it “a typically melodramatic yet potent and relevant depiction of systemic miseries that lead to a hard-luck heroine’s police standoff.” So I’m watching. Netflix has also added Sara – Woman in the Shadows, a 2025 Italian mystery series .Teresa Saponangelo stars as Sara, here, a retired intelligence op living in, who is drawn back into service after the death of her son. When Sara ends up killing the man responsible, she becomes vulnerable to blackmail by her former partner Teresa (Claudia Gerini), who forces Sara to investigate the disappearance of her boyfriend. And so Sara begins investigations again, with police detective Pardo (Flavio Furno), while building a relationship with her son’s widow, Viola (Chiara Celotto). Carmine Recano, Erasmo Genzini and Giacomo Giorgio also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.3/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times calls it “a gritty thriller and an intriguing watch” And I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers Uninvited, a 2025 Filipino thriller. This finds Lilia Capistrano(Vilma Santos), ten years after the death of her daughter, Lily (Gabby Padilla) at the sumptuous party of billionaire Guilly Vega (Aga Muhlach), using the alias of Eva Candelaria. For Vega is a criminal, having accrued his riches from drugs and sex trafficking, and Lillia/Eva has a plan to avenge the death of her daughter. But can she maintain her ruse long enough, to satisfy her need for avenge? Nadine Lustre, Aga Muhlach and Lotlot de Leon also star, and Dan Villegas directed. And this movie was nominated for 7 awards at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival, and went on to win the Best Float Award there. And it gets a 6.5/10 on IMDb, and Karen A.P. Caliwara of Pep Ph called it “a gripping masterpiece of revenge.” And I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added My Future You, a 2025 Filipino romcom. Here, Karen(Francine Diaz) and Lex(Seth Fedelin) meet on a dating app, and begin to fall in love. But on one of their video chats, Karen notices that calendar behind Lex says 2009 , not 2024. And it turns out they are trapped in different times, using a magical dating app that only works when a comet approaches(?). But their romance continues, until Karen asks Lex to write a letter to her now absent father, hoping to change her future. And when that plan explodes, can their love survive? Bodjie Pascua, Peewee O’Hara and Almira Muhlach also star, and Crisanto Aquino directed. And this movie was nominated for 8 awards at last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, and went onto win Best Breakthrough Performance for Fedelin and Best Director for Crisanto Aquino. And it gets a whopping 7.5/10 on IMDb, and Anjali Sharma of the Midgard Times called it “a delightful surprise: inventive, emotionally intelligent, and full of gentle charm. It’s a love tale presented across time, but it’s also based on very genuine emotions like longing, regret, and hope.” So I’m watching.
AMAZON
Amazon’s big title this week is The Accountant 2, the 2025 action thriller. Ben Affleck returns as Christian Wolff, here, as the forensic accountant/fixer, asked to investigate the murder of Ray King(J. K. Simmons!). And so Wolff gathers his team, including his brother Braxton(Jon Bernthal), and Justine(Allison Robertson), and they begin their bloody and chaotic search for their killer. Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda and Alison Wright also star, while Gavin O’Connor directs. And this movie gets a respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Manohla Dargis of the New York Times says “all that counts in The Accountant 2 is that it’s adroitly paced, unburdened by narrative logic and buoyed by its well-synced, charismatic leads.” But I’d rather watch Good Boy, a 2025 K-drama series. This begins with a loopy new program by the Seoul Police to recruit ex-champion athletes for their squad. Luckily, Olympic gold Medalist boxer Yoon Dong-ju(Park Bo-gum), is rarin’ to go, full of optimism and ideal. He is partnered with ex-wrestler Min Joo-yeong (Heo Sung-tae), but they soon find themselves given less meaningful work than they had planned. But as the squad searches for clues on bigger crimes, they might find that those who employed them had plans of their own. Kim So-hyun, Oh Jung-se, Lee Sang-yi, Heo Sung-tae, and Tae Won-seok also star, and there are 3 episodes available now. And this series gets an astonishing 8.2/10 on IMDb, and Bhavna Agarwal of India Today says its a ” goofy, gutsy, and packed with potential. Come for Park Bo-gum’s heartthrob heroics, stay for the action, the bromance, and the hope that this underdog squad finally gets their due.” So I’m tuning in. And , finally, Amazon has added Season 1 Scrublands, a 2024 Australian series from premium AMC+. This finds journalist Martin Scarsden(Luke Arnold) sent to the town of Riversend a year after a horrific mass shooting. But while he assigned to do a puff piece on the area, Scarsden instead starts digging into the story of Catholic priest Byron Swift (Jay Ryan), who shot 5 people, before police killed him. And though the town roils with scurrilous rumors about the priest, Scarsden finds himself convinced some else was going on. Something the townspeople themselves don’t want him to discover. Bella Heathcote, Adam Zwar, Victoria Thaine and Toby Truslove also star, and there are 4 episodes available for bingeing now. And Jay Ryan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Logie Awards for his work in this series, that gets an impressive 7.2/10 on IMDb, and Karl Quinn of The Age called it “an engaging, well-made piece of work that doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel…compelling rural noir.” So I’m tuning in. But remember to finish before July 1st, when this series returns to AMC+.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
