While Josie finally makes it into art school, Billie seems to have found a good man, Deb‘s boyfriend Dev isn’t doing as well. And though I don’t want to include any spoilers here, Josie and Billie might actually meet their long-lost dad this time around. And this series won the esteemed Best Scripted Comedy award at the 2024 BAFTAs , and gets an astonishing 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Margaret Lyons of the New York Times calls it an “audacious and hilarious British comedy. ” So count me in. But Hulu has also added Insomnia, a 2024 British mystery/thriller series. Vicky McClure plays Emma Averill, here, a successful family lawyer, living a seemingly idyllic life, with her husband Rob (Tom Cullen) and two kids. But then as her 40th birthday nears, Emma finds herself besieged by insomnia, wandering the house nervously, and worried. For insomnia isn’t merely a frustrating condition in her family, but could portend of something more serious, as her mother developed insomnia at 40, which led to mental illness and hospitalization. And as Emma tries to remain calm, her mother’s impending death in the hospital stresses her out even more, and her behavior becomes increasingly bizarre and unpredictable. India Fowler, Leanne Best, and Corinna Marlowe also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb, and Jasper Rees of the Daily Telegraph said “the three excellent main performances are stronger than the writing: like good sculptors McClure, Best and Marshal use their skill to carve depths into shallow matter.” And I love a mystery, so you know I’m watching. Hulu also has Big Easy Queens, a 2025 horror musical comedy. This takes place in the French Quarter in New Orleans, where Minnie(Miss Bouvèé) is a nightclub singer who holds sway in the mob world as well. But soon her own life is threatened by a mysterious stranger, and while her friends, and her sister, Mimi (Benjamin Shaevitz aka Suzie Toot) gather to protect her, Minnie has a few ideas of how to get revenge, all on her own. Matthew Darren,Varla Jean Merman and Eric Swanson also star, and Erynn Dalton directed. And this campy movie gets an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting says “what Big Easy Queens lacks in budget, it makes up for in dazzling musical numbers and charming camaraderie between queens.” So I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has added Team Players, a 2025 Brazilian comedy series. Here, serious sports journalist(Carol Castro) is delighted when she’s asked to co-anchor of a sports show. But disgust soon follows, when she finds her new cohost is none other than Matheus Reis (José Loreto), a mercurial former soccer star, with whom she has a very rocky relationship. Not to mention the fact that he considers her a rat, for previous her reporting on him. But the show goes on, and if the two don’t kill each other, who knows what might happen? Ravel Cabral, Danilo de Moura and Luciana Paes also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And it gets a 6.7/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it , adding it “has us intrigued due to the chemistry between Carol Castro and José Loreto, and the tug-of-war that their characters will have during the first season.”
NETFLIX
Netflix has a huge add, with Lena Dunham’s new 2025 comedy series, Too Much. Megan Stalter stars as as Jessica, New Yorker who decides to move to London, after a bad break-up. But London isn’t as romantic as it seemed, until she stumbles upon a pub where Felix(Will Sharpe) is performing. But though Jessica is taken, Felix refuses her kiss, and she returns home, to stalk her ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend and promptly, and accidentally, sets her nightgown on fire. But when Felix picks her up from the hospital, romance ensues. But not without enough bumps in the road to make them wonder if they will ever find true love. Emily Ratajkowski, Aylin Scott, Rhea Perlman(!) and Rita Wilson also star, and there are 10 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Kaiya Shunyata of RogerEbert.com says it “perfectly toes the line between drama and comedy, unspooling the most severe moments of Jessica and Felix’s pasts, but never leaving the audience with enough despair that they can’t laugh by the end of each episode.” So I’m watching. Netflix also offers Under a Dark Sun, a French mystery series. This finds Alba Mazier (Ava Baya) leaving a dangerous situation with her son, Leo (Max Harter), heading for Barcelona. But en route, she receives an email offer for a job on a massive flower farm from its owner, Arnaud Lasserre (Thibault De Montalembert). Here, Shrimenu(Madhavan), a Sanskrit teacher from a conservative family, finally signs up on a dating app, AJK, after failing to find a wife, at 42. Based on a true story first reported in the Washington Post, this tells of the International Liaison Unit in Tijuana, where agents seek out illegal (and usually criminal ) U.S. immigrants to Mexico. What he, and fellow agents Gloria(Mayra Hermosillo), and Cri(Héctor Kotsifakis), find is a web of conspirators, with some of the most powerful people in the area involved. AMAZON
Amazon has an exciting add this week with Ballard, a 2025 crime drama series. In this spin-off of the Bosch: Legacy series, Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) assigned to head LAPD’s Cold Case division . After solving their first case, the team is urged to solve the murder of a young woman in 2001, the sister of an influential city councilman. But Ballard wants to investigate a missing John Doe, instead, so she calls in an old friend Samira Parker (Courtney Taylor). But as they juggle both cases, with one, perhaps, leading to a serial killer, Ballard also has to deal with past trauma, that dogs her every step. Michael Mosley, John Carroll Lynch, Rebecca Field and Victoria Moroles also star, and Bosch himself (Titus Welliver!) makes a cameo appearance. And this series, with 10 episodes available now, gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Aramide Tinubu of Variety says it’s “smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, Ballard is a thrilling ride from start to finish.” So I’m definitely tuning in. But amazon has also added Better Man, the 2024 musical drama. This tells the life story of British pop superstar Robbie Williams, and his youth in a working class family, dreaming of success and stardom. But instead of a mundane human portrayal of Williams, director Michael Gracey(The Greatest Show on Earth) inserts a CGI chimp, with human actor Jonno Davies filling the motion capture movements. Otherwise , our story progresses linearly, with Williams soaring to stardom, battling substance abuse and depression, then making a recovery and a comeback, too. With his friends and mum, Betty(Alison Steadman) standing by him, and plenty of music and dance included. Kate Mulvany, Steve Pemberton and Frazer Hadfield also star, and with Gracey, Simon Gleeson and Oliver Cole co-wrote the screenplay. And this movie was nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects at the 2025 Oscars and won numerous awards last year, including Best Film and Best Director at the Australian Academy of 2025 Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards. And it gets a 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Adam Graham of the Detroit News said “There are moments in Better Man, the often thrilling biopic of unabashedly cheeky U.K. pop star Robbie Williams, where you forget you’re watching a CGI monkey in the lead role.” So it’s on my list. And, finally, Amazon has The Killer’s Shopping List, a 2022 K-drama comedy/mystery series. This finds Ahn Dae-sung(Lee Kwang-soo) and his mother, Myung-sook(Jin Hee-kyung) greeted as heroes, after they catch a counterfeiter in their store outside Seoul. Dae-sung‘s good memory and quick wittedness aided in that discovery, so when he finds a body near the store, he is convinced he can help in the investigation. But the Chief of Police disagrees, targeting him as a suspect, and female officer Do Ah Hee (Seol Hyun) may be his only hope in solving the crime, and getting himself off the hook. Shin Sung-woo, Lee Gyo-yeop and Moon Hee-kyung also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And this series gets an impressive7.1/0 on IMDb, but an outstanding 9.3/10 on Viki. so, though I can find no online reviews as yet, I am definitely watching. I love a mystery.
