Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu‘s big title added this week is The Amateur, the 2025 thriller. Rami Malek(!) stars, here, as CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller, who is shocked with the violent death of his wife, Sarah(Rachel Brosnahan), in a terrorist attack. So he becomes determined to find and kill those responsible, and asks the CIA to train him for their apprehension . But when CIA officials (literally) laugh in his face, Heller goes to Robert “Hendo” Henderson(Laurence Fishburne!), who trains him in some skills, including bomb making. But, when even Hendo declares Heller incapable of killing, Charlie goes rogue, and begins to find and kill the terrorists. Which leads the CIA to hunt him down, and Henderson may be the only one that can save his skin. Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany and Julianne Nicholson also star, and James Hawes directs. And this movie gets a 6.5/10 on IMDb, and Bob Mondello of NPR said “filmmaker James Hawes keeps The Amateur clicking along competently, if not plausibly, through loose ends, loose characters and some blather from the head of the CIA about ethics.” So I’m watching. But Hulu has also added The Assessment, a 2024 sci-fi thriller. This takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, where Mia(Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) want to have a child. But the government fears over-population, so a weeklong assessment is required, so Virginia(Alicia Vikander) comes to stay with the couple. But, as her 7-day stay continues, her bizarre behavior , tests and requirements drive the couple to the edge. And as it culminates in a dinner party with guest from hell, the the potential parents, especially Mia, wonder if it’s all worth it. Minnie Driver, Indira Varma and Saida Fuentes also star, and Fleur Fortuné directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2024, including 3 at the British Independent Film Awards, where it went on to win Best Production Design. And it gets an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com said “the first feature from [Fleur Fortuné] has a ton of style, and signals from the beginning her confident use of framing, texture and color.” You decide. Hulu also offers Get Away, a 2024 horror comedy thriller. In this horror parody, the Smith family sets off on vacation to a remote Swedish island of Svӓlta. As Richard (Nick Frost) and Susan(Aisling Bea) drag their two teens to a rental on the island the weird locals prepare for the Karantän celebration, an ancient fertility festival. And while their host, Matts (Eero Milonoff), is warm and hospitable, the rest of the islanders are definitely not glad to see the visitors, and become more and more menacing. And as the family fears for their lives, their escape is anything but guaranteed. Sebastian Croft, Maisie Ayres, and Ville Virtanen also star, and Steffen Haars directed. And this movie was nominated for Best Motion Picture at the 2024 Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival, and gets a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Johnny Loftus of the Decider calls it “a funny and increasingly bloody (and twisty) trip as it skewers vacation horror stories and horror films themselves with a smart, unapologetically dark script from writer-star Nick Frost.” And you know it’s too scary for me. And, finally, Hulu has added Low Life, a 2025 Disney+ K-drama action thriller series. This takes place in 1977 South Korea, where a sunken treasure is rumored to be just waiting to be found off the coast. So everybody in the area comes to search , and Oh Gwang-seok (Ryu Seung-ryong) and his nephew Oh Hee-dong (Yang Se-Jong) join the hun, when asked to salvage it, by a cryptic woman with a pile of money. but pandemonium ensues, with any number of con men and grifters searching for the treasure, and who will find it is anyone’s guess. Kim Eui-sung, Kim Sung-oh, Lee Dong-hwi, Woo Hyeon, and Hong Ki-joon also star, and there are 3 episodes available now, with 8 more to come. And this series gets an astounding 7.5/10 on IMDb, and Melissa Foong of Lifestyle Asia calls it “a gritty period thriller rooted in harsh realities. ” And I am so tuning in.
NETFLIX
The big title on Netflix this week must be Untamed, a 2025 crime drama series. Eric Bana(!) stars, here, as Special Agent Kyle Turner, asked to investigate when a Jane Doe falls from the face of El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park. Working with LAPD transfer, Naya Vasquez(Lily Santiago), the pair find that the woman was dead before she fell, and they begin their search for the murderer. But they have few suspects, and thousands of acres to search. And then another body turns up in the area. Rosemarie Dewitt, Raoul Max Trujillo and Sam Neill(!) also star, and there are 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets an impressive 7.3/10 on IMDb, and Aramide Tinubu of Variety says “deeply layered and gripping, Untamed is a brilliant detective tale anchored by some of our worst human impulses. It is a story of pain, shame and the hope of redemption, even when there appears to be no way out.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix has also added Delirium, a 2025 Colombian limited series. Based on the acclaimed novel Delirio by Colombian author Laura Restrepo, this tells of Augustina (Estefanía Piñeres), suffering a mental health crisis, and her new husband Aguilar (Juan Pablo Raba), who tries to finds the cause. But since they had a whirlwind courtship, Aguilar still knows little about his wife, and so he goes searching for clues, hidden in her past. What he finds is a rich history of family trauma and trove of secrets, with no one wanting to bring them to light. Juan Pablo Urrego, Paola Turbay, Jose Julián Gaviria and Jacobo Diez Díaz also star, and there are available now. And though this series gets mixed reviews, it gets a 6.7/10 on IMDb, and Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies says “the performances from the cast of Delirium are sort of the only saving grace here. Juan Pablo Urrego, in the role of Midas, is simply phenomenal.” So I’m watching. Netflix also offers Wall to Wall, a 2025 K-drama thriller. This tells of Woo-seong(Kang Ha-neul of Sguid Game!), a driven young man who finally saves up enough to buy an apartment in Seoul. But 3 years later, the apartment’s value has taken a steep drop, and Woo-seong is deeply in debt, afraid to spend on even electricity and food. Distraught, Woo-seung then begins to hear strange noises from the apartment downstairs, and the question of whether he can survive his purchase is anyone’s guess. Jennifer Aquino, Liz Burnette and Yeom Hye-ran also star, while Kim Tae-joon and Sharon S Park co-directed. And this movie gets a 6/10 on IMDb, and mixed reviews, but Karina Adelgaard of Heaven of Horror says “it’s one of the most stress-inducing movies I can ever remember having watched. And I mean that as a compliment.” But you know I’m not watching. Netflix has added Delightfully Deceitful, a 2023 K-drama thriller series. This finds Lee Ro-woom(Chun Woo-hee) wrongly accused of the murder of her parents, and having served ten years, she is finally saved by the esteemed attorney, Han Moo-yeong(Kim Dong-wook). But while the ethical Moo-yeong wants to help his client, she has vengeance, maybe even violence, on her mind. Can he rein her in before the blood starts to flow? Yoon Park, Lee Hae-young and Kim Jeong-yeong also star, and there are 16 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a sparkling 7.2/10 on IMDb, and Christine Kinori of the Review Geek calls it “is one of those K-dramas that’ll leave you with a mixture of emotions. From anger to shock, sadness, and happiness, this is an enjoyable and well written K-drama.” So I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Catalog, a 2025 Egyptian drama series. Here, Youssef(Mohamed Farrag) finds himself grief stricken and at sea, after the death of his wife, Amina(Riham Abdel Ghafour), left to care for their two kids, Karima (Rital Abdelaziz) and younger son Mansour (Ali El Beialy), alone. And Youssef is a workaholic, used to Amina caring for the kids, and ignorant of how to care for anyone, even himself. Luckily, Amina foresaw this problem and left videos for him on her YouTube channel, Amina’s Catalog, that helps Youssef care for the kids, and feel his wife’s love, even after her death. Sedky Sakhr, Khaled Kamal and Ahmed Essam Elsayed also star, and there are 8 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets an astounding 8/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, adding “we still enjoyed the arc that he experiences in Catalog, which has some truly funny and heartfelt moments.” And I am definitely tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon‘s only major add this week is season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the 2025 YA romantic drama series. Here, Belly Conklin(Lola Tung) returns for summer vacation to Cousins, from her Junior year in. Expecting to spend her holiday with Jeremiah(Gavin Casalegno), her plans are turned upside down when she hears some unpleasant news. And then Conrad(Christopher Briney) comes back into her life, threatening to shake things up even more. Rain Spencer, Sean Kaufman and Jackie Chung also star, and there are 2 episodes available for streaming now. and it gets a 7.3/10 on IMDb and Radhika Menon of the Decider says it “continues to make the love triangle between childhood friends compelling as the show enters college and adulthood.” But Amazon also offers Surf Girls: International, the 2025 docuseries. This follows five young native Hawaiian female surfers as they compete in the Challenger series, which takes them all over the world. But as they deal with the higher pressure of a big competition, they also deal with other adversities, like Sophia, who has to return to competition, after enduring a broken back, or Jessie, who has to endure financial hardship. And the interviews are as absorbing as the surfing scenes are exciting. And there are 5 episodes available now. And this series gets a whooping 7.9/10 on IMDb, and Greg Wheeler of the Review Geek says it “offers an accessible, engaging look into the next generation of surf stars. With high stakes, heart, and an infectious passion for the sport, this second season is well worth checking out.” And I’m definitely watching. And, finally, Amazon offers season 1 of The Cleaner, a 2021 British comedy series from Britbox. This follows professional crime scene cleaner Paul “Wicky” Wickstead(Greg Davies) as he goes about his business. Often irritated with the bloody mess he has to clean, he plods through his chores, and always gets interrupted by some annoyance. Sometimes it’s just a nosy busybody, and sometimes, it’s a killer, like Sheila (Helena Bonham Carter), who explains to Wicky (at gunpoint) why she had to kill her husband. Regardless, there’s always some annoyance gumming up the works, and delaying Wicky from getting to his ‘curry night’ dinner, or just to the pub. Zita Sattar, Barry Castagnola and Jane Lewis also star, and there are 6 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Joel Keller of the Decider said “works as a comedy, but it also works as light drama, as Davies has found an ingenious way to make each episode completely different.” So I’m tuning in. But be sure to finish before August 1, when the series goes back to Britbox, only to be had for a premium fee.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
