Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a big add this week The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, the 2025 crime drama series. Based on the true story we’ve all heard something about, Grace Van Patten plays Amanda Knox, who travels to Perugia, Italy, as a 20 year-old student, with few ideas of how the law works, or her rights, there. After the horrible murder of her roommate, Amanda was arrested, questioned in Italian , without a lawyer, and was arrested. As she is convicted, then acquitted, then reconvicted, and then reacquitted, the ordeal becomes almost . After serving 4 years, Knox left Italy, but returned to clear her name, and face her accusers, no matter what the cost. Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli and Giuseppe De Domenico also star, and there are 4 episodes available now. And this series gets a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lucy Mangan of the
Guardian said it “has its flaws… Fortunately, the main parts are held together by an unreservedly brilliant performance by Grace Van Patten as Knox, in English and Italian.” And I’m tuning in. But Hulu has also added Eenie Meanie, a 2025 action/comedy. Samara Weaving(!) stars, here, as Edie, nicknamed Eenie Meanie, an ex-get away driver, who finds herself pulled back in to her old world, when her old boyfriend, John(Karl Glusman) shows up. And this time, he’s deeply indebt to a crime lord, Nico (Andy Garcia), so Edie has to get back in the car, and help John rob a casino. And, of course, things don’t go as planned. Jermaine Fowler, Marshawn Lynch, and Steve Zahn also star, and Shawn Simmons directs. But it only gets a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com calls it “a collection of clichés in search of an actual movie.” And I’m definitely not watching. Luckily, Hulu also offers Breakdown, a 2025 Disney+ Argentine thriller series. Here, a classical pianist in Argentina, Miranda Sanguinetti(Tini Stoessel), is troubled by anxiety, which worsens as she obsesses over being adopted, knowing nothing of her family or past in Mexico, her place of birth. So she travels to Mexico City, over the objections of her parents, to find the truth, and resolve her issues. There she meets her cousin, Javier Lara (played by Jorge López), whose kindness and concern mask his interest in using her to control the family business, which is crime. And, as Miranda is pulled more and more into their criminal world, she wonders if she what family really is, and if she will be able to survive her family visit. Martín Barba, Daniela Peña, Albi De Abreu and Lucía Gómez-Robledo also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb, and Lya Rosen Danus of Televitoscom says “it manages to win over audiences with it’s well-crafted approach and sense of suspense.” So I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has added High Country, a 2024 Australian mystery series. Here, Detective Andie Whitford(Leah Purcell!) is transferred to the small town of Broken Ridge in the Victorian High Country, hoping for a more quiet life. But then a local man disappears from his stranded car, and Whitford must investigate, and she finds there have been other disappearances in the area before. But the locals are distrusting, and bristle at questions from the newcomer, and finds her own life at risk, as she hunts for a killer. Ian McElhinney, Sara Wiseman, Aaron Pedersen and Linda Cropper also star, and there are 8 episodes available for bingeing now. And Leah Purcell was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Drama at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards for her work here, while this series gets a 7/10 on IMDb, and Naser Nahandian of Gazettely said “High Country delivers a solid and atmospheric whodunit with plenty of picturesque scenery between clues.” And I love a mystery, so I’m definitely tuning in.
NETFLIX
The big add on Netflix this week is Hostage, a 2025 British thriller series. this finds Prime Minister Abigail Dalton(Suranne Jones!) already dealing with multiple crises in the government, with the economy failing, budget troubles and medial shortages, on the eve of her historic meeting with right-wing French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy!). But then Dalton learns her husband and his medical team have been taken hostage in French Guiana, an area under French control. But as she turns to the French president for help, she is greeted with intransigence, and overwhelming counterdemands. And as the terrorists demand Dalton‘s resignation, she and Vivienne Toussaint grapple to come to some agreement to save the hostages lives. Lucian Msamati, Corey Mylchreest and Hiftu Quasem also star, and there are 5 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a positive 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Joel Keller of the Decider calls it “a solid political thriller made better by the performances of Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy, especially when they’re on screen together.” So I’m tuning in. But Netflix has also added Long Story Short, a 2025 animated comedy series. This series, from the makers of Bojack Horseman, tells of Schwooper sibs, (Abbi Jacobson),Yoshi (Max Greenfield) and Avi (Ben Feldman), Jewish and living in Northern California. As they go through life’s joys and travails, they also have to deal with each other, and their demanding mom, Naomi(Lisa Edelstein) and dad, Elliot (Paul Reiser). As this series travels through time in a nonlinear fashion, we gets to see things from different points of view, with everyone disagreeing, but much hilarity. Dave Franco, Angelique Cabral and Nicole Byer also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and James Poniewozik of the New York Times calls it a “wildly funny, swinging, like “Bojack,” from deep emotion to loony tune slapstick.” And I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers Abandoned Man, a 2025 Turkish drama. This tells the story of Baran(Mert Ramazan Demir), a man ruined by a fateful confession he made years earlier, for a hit and run his brother actually committed. After he is released(after 15 horrific years in prison), he is met by that brother, Fatih, who is full of remorse. But Baran angrily refuses any reconciliation, and finds haven in an abandoned building. But then, his brother and his wife are in a car accident, and left in a coma, and Baran finds his niece Lidya(Ada Erma), in need of his care. And, as he cares for the girl, he finds that he might heal his own wounds, as well. Ercan Kesal, Rahimcan Kapkap and Burcu Cavrar also star, while Çagri Vila Lostuvali directs. And this movie gets a 6.1/10 on IMDb, and LaNeysha Campbell of But Why Tho calls it “a touching story about sacrifice, hope, and the burdensome responsibilities family can impose.” So I’m watching. Netflix has also added Aema, a 2025 K-drama comedy series. This takes place in 1980’s Seoul, where the (difficult) movie star Hee-ran(Lee Hanee) stuck with a bad contract. When she decides to do the one last movie required of her, it turns out to be erotica, and so she disagrees. And so her (ex-fiancé) producer decides to put her in a supporting role, and casts the newcomer Ju-ae(Bang Hyo-rin) in the lead role of Aema, instead. Which puts Hee-ran on the war path, determined to sabotage the film, and oust Ju-ae. Jin Seon-kyu, Cho Hyun-chul and Hyun Bong-sik also star, and there are 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And it gets a 6.6/10 on IMDb, and Lopa K. of the Review Geek calls it a “hard hitting exposé wrapped as a dramedy..[that] still an entertaining watch that leaves viewers in an introspective mood.” And, finally, Netflix has added Bon Appetit, Your Majesty, a 2025 K-drama romcom fantasy series. This finds Chef Yeon Ji-yeong(Im Yoon-ah), a French-trained chef, determined to cook in a Michelin star restaurant. But then she is transported back into the Joseon era, by an ancient and magical book, and finds herself in the court of tyrant, King Yi-heon(Lee Chae-min). Since she doesn’t know how to get back to her own time , she cooks the king all sorts of modern dishes, like steak and pasta, seeking to gain his approval. But if she can survive the king, can she survive the intrigues of his court, when jealousy over her position arises? Kang Han-na, Choi Gwi-hwa and Seo Yi-Sook also star, and there is 1 episode available now, with 11 more to come. And there are no ratings on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes, as yet, but Beatrix Kondo of Soap Central says “it begins like a feast you didn’t know you were craving, …it sharply blends fantasy, history and emotion into one plate.” And I’m tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon has few big titles added this week, like Wolf Man, the 2025 horror flick. Here, Blake(Christopher Abbott), a loving family man, moves back to rural Oregon, with his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth), after his father’s death. But Blake is violently attacked their first night in their new home, and as Blake boards up the house to keep the beast out, he slowly begins his awful transformation into a beast himself. And Charlotte and Ginger are left with the terrible decision of how to protect themselves from someone they love. Benedict Hardie, Sam Jaeger and Zac Chandler also star, and Leigh Whannell(The Invisible Man!) directed. And though this movie gets 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, Nadira Goffe of Slate said while it “had a lot of squandered potential, it’s still a fairly serviceable horror flick! Christopher Abbott delivers a great performance, and all the classic horror techniques are certainly employed.” But you know it’s too scary for me. Amazon has also added The Map That Leads to You, the 2025 YA romance. This finds Heather(Madelyn Cline) on the tail end of her trip to Europe with her friends, when she meets Jack (KJ Apa), on the way to Barcelona. As he charms her into seeing him, she finds they are polar opposites, with Jack winging it through his travels and Heather planning everything to a T. But can he convince her to abandon her plans, and continue to travel through Europe, with him? Sofia Wylie, Madison Thompson and Orlando Norman also star, while Lasse Hallström directed. But it’s pretty predictable and gets only a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, Chris Azzopardi of the New York Times said “it’s all as comfortably mindless as you’d expect.” So you decide. And, finally, Amazon has Head Over Heels, a 2025 K-drama romantic fantasy series. Here, Seong-a (Cho Yi-hyun), is a successful high school student, whose avocation as shaman consumes her spare time. In her temple behind her parent’s house, she banishes demons and ghosts from peoples’ lives. But when Bae Gyeon-u (Choo Young-woo), walks in one day with his grandmother, who begs Seong-a to help him, as he is cursed with bad luck and misfortune, she agrees to help. But she also instantly fell in love with him, while wearing her shaman’s mask, so he has no idea who she is. And when they meet in school, she must protect him from the evil spirits, even though he has no idea what she’s doing. Chu Ja-hyeon, Kim Mi-kyung and Gil Hae-yeon also star, and there are 12 episodes available now. And this series gets an whopping 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Sarah Musnicky of But Why Tho? said “episodes 1-2, immediately pave the way for what will likely be an addictive watch.” So I’m tuning in.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
