Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has few big titles added this week, but they do have Sisu, the 2022 Finnish historical action thriller. This takes place in the final days of WWII in Finland, with a prospector, Aatami(Jorma Tommila) who finally comes upon a mine rich in gold. Unfortunately, Nazis come upon him, and steal his gold, and try to kill him. But they don’t succeed, and so they end up running for their lives from a lethal force(and former commando), who will stop at nothing to get his revenge. Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo and Onni Tommila also star, and Jalmari Helander directed. And this movie won numerous awards in 2023 including, Best Cinematography for Kjell Lagerroos, Best Editing for Juho Virolainen and Best Productioon for Otso Linnalaakso at the Jussi Awards, and the Audience Award at the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival. And it gets an astounding 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and, though Sisu is ultra-violent, Sandra Hall of the Sydney Morning Herald said “rather than being directed to avert your gaze from the effects of violence, you’re watching it magnified to the point of the cartoonish. It’s lavishly embellished with blood and gore. Talk about a guilty pleasure.” You decide. Hulu has also added Hell of a Summer, a 2024 horror comedy. This finds Jason (Fred Hechinger), anticipating his return to his beloved Camp Pineway for another summer, as he shows up for Counselor Weekend. But, as he is teased and ridiculed by the other counselors, another problem arises, when counselors begin to show up dead. And Jason becomes the number one suspect. Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, Billy Bryk, Finn Wolfhard and Pardis Saremi also star, and Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk co-directed. And though it’s nothing new and gets a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News said it “made me laugh and kept me thoroughly engaged. It’s no classic, but it’s still oddly charming and fun, and points to good things ahead for filmmakers Bryk and Wolfhard.” So it’s on my list. Hulu also offers Twelve, a 2025 J-drama fantasy action series. Here, twelve angels from the Korean horoscope live on Earth as humans, having banished the evil it long ago . But now, a new threat has arisen, and the future of the world depends upon these angels, led by Taesan(Ma Dong-seok), to stop it. And they have just one day, to usen their magical powers, to stop the Gates of Hell from being opened, and releasing all its demons. Lee Joo-bin, Park Hyung-sik, Seo In-guk and Kang Mi-na also star and there are 2 episodes available for streaming now. And it gets a 6.8/10 on IMDb, and India Today says its “off to a thrilling start.” So I’m tuning in. And, finally, Hulu has Kesari Chapter 2, a 2025 historical drama. This takes place in 1913, in the wake of the Jallianwala Bagh genocide, where at least 1,650 people were killed by British soldiers. So the esteemed barrister, and member of the Viceroy’s Council, Sankaran Nair(Akshay Kumar ) had the courage to sue the British Empire for this atrocity, focusing on Brigadier-general Reginald Dyer(Simon Paisley Day), who ordered his men to open fire on the unarmed crowd, that day. And Nair was aided by law student Dilreet Gillm and Pargat Singh(Amit Sial), as he faced off against the colonial government, and it’s lawyer Neville McKinley (R. Madhavan). Ananya Pandey, Alexx O’Nell and Deepak Antani also star, and Karan Singh Tyagi directs. And this movie was nominated for Best Film at the 2025 International Iconic Awards, and gets a whopping 8/10 on IMDb. And Dhaval Roy of the Times of India said “this deep dive into the lesser-known case that shook the Empire makes for an incredible tale. Its gripping narrative and stellar performances make it a must-watch fare. ” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has a huge add with The Thursday Murder Club, the 2025 mystery. Based on the blockbuster book by Richard Osman, this tells of 4 seniors at the Coopers Chase retirement center who gather every Thursday in the Jigsaw Puzzle Room, to solve cold cases. Elizabeth(Helen Mirren!), an ex-MI6 agent, usually takes the lead , but Ron(Pierce Brosnan!), and Ibrahim(Ben Kingsley!) also have specific talents that serve crime-solving well. But a disappearance closer to home takes place, and then a murder ensues, and suddenly, some members of the Thursday Murder Club find themselves named as suspects. Celia Imrie, David Tennant(!), Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays and Jonathan Pryce (!)also star, while Chris Columbus(Harry Potter! ) directs. And this movie gets a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Sheila O’Malley of RogerEbert.com says “there’s a very welcome absence of condescension and sentimentality that is often used in the portrayal of elderly people on film, particularly when they engage in activities not typically associated with their age.” adding it’s “engaging and often amusing. The plot contains enough surprises that the whodunit generates real suspense.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix also offers Rumah Untuk Alie, a 2025 Indonesian drama. This tells the story of a girl, Alie(Anantya Rezky Kirana), who is blamed by her father and brothers, for her mother’s sudden death. As their intense abuse, both physical and emotional continues, she is also tormented at school by bullies. But she also has a friend at school, and maybe even a friend at home, who can help her through this dark time. Rizky Hanggono, Dito Darmawan and Tika Bravan also star, while Herwin Novianto directs. And this movie gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb, and Anjali Sharma of the Midgard Times says “it is a quietly powerful family drama anchored by a luminous central performance…”And I’m watching. Netflix also offers Katrina: Come Hell and High Water, a 2025 limited documentary series. This tells of Hurricane Katrina, that whipped New Orleans 20 years ago this weekend. Each of the three episodes, here, tell of a different aspect of the disaster, both naturally and human wrought, and it’s aftermath for the people of New Orleans. The first, The Perfect Neighbor, tells of the neglect that left thousands of Americans stranded across the city , with no rescue seemingly in sight. The second, Black and Missing, considers the aftermath of the levees breaking, with very false reports of black crime taking hold of the media, while in fact, Blacks were more often the victims of white crimes, at that time. And the third, directed by Spike Lee(!) ,God Takes Care of Fools and Babies, tells of New Orleans since the catastrophe, and it’s ongoing wounds, like the harm done to the educational system there, and the exodus of Black citizens. Geeta Gandbhir directed the first episode, while Samantha Knowles directed the second, and this series gets an stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Jack Seale of the Guardian says its a “a stirring tribute to what has been lost and what has been stolen, but it assures us that New Orleans will never be gone, even if it will never be the same.” And I’m so tuning in. Netflix has also added Two Graves, a 2025 Spanish mystery mini-series. Here, 2 teenage girls disappear in a small town in Spain, one of them, the granddaughter of Isabel (Kiti Manver). As the search continues for Veronica (Nadia Vilaplana) and her friend Marta (Zoe Arnao), leads dry up, and though the body of Marta is found, no evidence of Veronica’s whereabouts arise. And so, Isabel, angry with authoritie up, begins to dig on her own, intent on finding clues, and looking for revenge. Nonna Cardoner, Álvaro Morte and Hovik Keuchkerian also star, and there are 3 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of Leisure Byte says “If you need a quick, easy and somewhat bloody fix this weekend, Two Graves makes for a good watch.” And I love a mystery, so I’m tuning in.And finally, Netflix has Love Untangled, a 2025 K-drama romcom. Here, Park Se-ri (Shin Eun-soo) is a teen who is crushing on classmate, Kim Hyeon(Cha Woo-min), so much that she’s considering a makeover for her curly hair. But then she saves the life of transfer student Han Yun-seok(Gong Myoung), he enters her life. And as Yun-seok wonders why she’d want to change her hair, Se-ri begins to wonder, indeed, if she should change at all. Yoon Sang-hyeon, Yuuki Luna and Kang Mi-na also star, and Sun Namkoong directs. And this movie gets an impressive 7.3/10 on IMDb, so, though I can find no reviews, as yet, I’m watching.
AMAZON
Amazon has a couple of titles added this week, Last Breath, the 2025 thriller. Based on a true story and a 2019 documentary, this tells two deep sea divers, Chris(Finn Cole) and Dave(Simu Liu), who dive to repair pipe lines at the bottom of the North Sea, only to be cut off from the world. With a storm raging above them, causing their support ship to move, Chris’ support cord is cut, and Dave must return to the surface alone, promising help. But the pitch darkness makes finding Chris nearly impossible, and so , when their mentor above, Duncan Allock (Woody Harrelson), comes up with a crazy idea to save them, it might be their only hope. Mark Bonnar, Cliff Curtis and Bobby Rainsbury also star, and Alex Parkinson directed. And this movie gets a respectable 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and David Sims of The Atlantic called it “a midsize version of a large-scale thriller, one that isn’t afraid to seem boring, and I mean that as a major compliment.” So I might tune in. Amazon has also added The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, a 2025 thriller series. In this prequel to The Terminal List, also on Amazon, this tells the story of SEAL Chief Special Warfare Ben Edwards(Taylor Kitsch), a flawed and troubled man. After he goes against orders in Iraq, carrying out a bloody mission, he’s reassigned to a desk job. But then CIA spymaster Jed Haverford(Robert Wisdom) recruits Edwards to join a special team, that works outside the rules. And so Edwards and his friend Navy SEAL, Lt. Raife Hastings( Tom Hopper) travel the world, blowing things up , and wreaking havoc on the ‘bad guys.’Dar Salim, Rona-Lee Shimon and Shiraz Tzarfati also star, and there are 7 episodes available now. And this series gets a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Alison Herman of Variety said “the plot prefers to hammer the viewer with the simplistic image of good guy Americans versus “monsters at the door” over the finer points of geopolitical conflict.” So I’m not watching. And, finally, Amazon has added Enemigos, a 2025 Spanish drama. This revolves around Chimo(Christian Checa), a young man working multiple jobs, and intent on starting his own business. But he has been bullied since childhood, targeted especially by El Rubio (Hugo Wetzel), who taunts him daily. But, as Chimo plans his revenge on El Rubio, he makes a discovery that changes everything. And the pair may just become friends. Estefanía de los Santos, José María Peinado and Luna Pamiés also star, while David Valero directs. And this movie gets a 6.9/10 on IMDb, and of says it “stands out for its honest look at adolescent conflict and neighborhood violence, supported by a solid narrative style and powerful performances.” So I’m tuning in.
