Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
If you’re still watching Hulu after the Jimmy Kimmel scandal, it has a big add with Swiped, a 2025 biopic. This tells the story of Tinder and Bumble founder, Whitney Wolfe, played by Lily James. As Wolfe tries to navigate the tech world, show her skills and make way for women in the industry, she comes up against sexism time after time. Finally leaving Tinder, in 2014, after accusing co-workers of sexual harassment, she goes on to develop Bumble , a dating app that makes a friendly space for women , with a workplace that does the same. Jackson White, Myha’la, Ben Schnetzer, and Pierson Fodé also star, and Rachel Lee Goldenberg directs. But this movie has it’s flaws, and so gets only a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Adrian Horton of the Guardian says “the history of how online dating went from deeply uncool to de rigueur is one worth telling, and Swiped’s methods, corny and contrived as they can be, are proficient enough to do it.” You decide. Hulu has also added also offers Jackdaw, a 2025 British thriller. Here, Jack(Oliver Jackson-Cohen) returns to Northern England, after his mother’s death, to care for his little brother, Simon (Leon Harrop. But things go wrong when Jack agrees to pickup a package in the North Sea, and he is double crossed. Jack, a former motocross champion, ends up eluding captors and evading criminals, only to find his brother is missing. So he goes on a high speed journey to find his brother, and extricate himself from trouble. Jenna Coleman(!),Thomas Turgoose, Allan Mustafa, and Rory McCann also star, and Jamie Childs directed. And though this movie gets a respectable 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, it still gets some surprisingly bad reviews, like that of Wendy Ide of the Guardian who said “Jamie Childs’s brisk little thriller boasts some decent sequences of vehicular mayhem. Unfortunately, it’s also as dumb as a bag of spanners.” So I probably won’t watch. Hulu has also added Corina, a 2024 Mexican dramedy. This finds Corina(Naian González Norvind), living in Guadalajara, after her mother’s death, working as an editor. But Corina‘s world is small, contracted to a radius of 4 blocks around her home, by her agoraphobia, always sticking to her routine. But then, she alters an author’s manuscript (without his permission), and it becomes a hit. So she must go in search of this writer, Silverman, and at the same time break out of her rigid routine. Luckily, she has a new friend Carlos, to help her explore, and find a new world for herself, too. Cristo Fernández, Carolina Politi, Mónica Bejarano, and Gerardo Trejoluna also star, and Urzula Barba Hopfner directs. And this movie won multiple awards in 2025, including Best Actress (Mejor Actriz) for Naian González Norvind and Best First Work for Urzula Barba Hopfner at the 2025 Mexican Cinema Journalists awards. And it gets a 7/10 on IMDb, and Louisa Moore of Screen Zealots called it “a delightful story that offers a charmingly imperfect and deeply endearing character study of a young woman struggling with agoraphobia and self-doubt.” And I am so tuning in. And, finally, Hulu has added Sister Midnight, a 2024 Hindi comedy. Here, Uma (Radhika Apte) finds herself in an arranged marriage to Gopal(Ashok Pathak), that isn’t going well. Gopal seems uninterested in Uma, coming home drunk and falling into bed, and she is furious. New to Mumbai, she begins to take midnight walks, smoking cigarettes(!), and yearning for more. She takes a job cleaning at an office building, makes new friends and learns to cook from a neighbor. And when she finally confess her midnight jaunts to Gopal, expecting the end of her marriage, she may be surprised at the outcome. Chhaya Kadam, Smita Tambe and Dev Raaz also star, and Karan Kandhari directed, along with writing the script. and this movie was nominated for the Golden Camera Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, 4 British Independent Film Awards and won Best Picture at the Austin Fantastic Fest. And it gets an astonishing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine/Vulture said “such depth makes Sister Midnight that much more fascinating and, ultimately, that much more heartbreaking.” And I’m definitely watching.
NETFLIX
Netflix has a huge add this week with Black Rabbit, the 2025 crime thriller series. Here, restauranteur Jake Friedken(Jude Law!) is shocked by the sudden reappearance of his recovering heroin addict brother, Vince(Jason Bateman!). And Vince has troubles, namely, a six-figure gambling debt to a mobster (Troy Kotsur), who threatens to kill Vince and his daughter, if he doesn’t pay up. Jake grudgingly agrees to help him, but his new restaurant, Black Rabbit, is set to open, and he has financial troubles of his own. But together, the pair may get into too much trouble to survive. Amaka Okafor, Sope Dirisu, Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Steven Lober also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. But it gets only a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Rebecca Nicholson of the Financial Times says “it is stylish, violent and perfectly serviceable, but somehow, when it swings big, it ends up feeling a little less than the sum of its parts.” Netflix has also added Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel, a 2025 Turkish comedy series. Here, Nezahat Atkaȿ (Ugur Demirpehlivan) runs the Blue Moon Hotel with her two daughters, Gülten (Gupse Özay) and Nedret(Öykü Karayel). But the hotel has seen better days, and now has just a couple of regulars. But that all changes when Kaan (Kerem Bürsin), a real estate developer, comes to stay, knocking every one in town off their feet with his charm and good looks. But Kaan has a secret, because he is secretly the buyer who has been trying to buy Nezahat’s hotel, and destroy it, to make way for his new project. Onur Bilgetay, Eda Akalin and Mehmet Özgür also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. and this series gets a 6/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, adding it’s “an amusing series about how two very different sisters approach love and romance, and how the object of their affection might be more in love with the hotel they run than anything else.” And I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers Haunted Hotel, a 2025 animated horror comedy series. Here, newly divorced Katherine (Eliza Coupe) moves into the Undervale hotel, after her brother, Nathan (Will Forte) bequeaths it to her. But as she and her two kids move in, she finds it haunted, by numerous ghosts, including her brother. As she and Nathan try to run the hotel, with Nathan looking after the undead guests, Katherine has to tend not only to live guests, but also her two kids, and the undead Abaddon (Jimmi Simpson), a demon trapped in the body of a child. Skyler Gisondo, Natalie Palamides and Riki Lindhome also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets a whopping 7.5/10 on IMDb, and Daniel Kurland of Bloody Disgusting says it “seeks to be for horror what Rick and Morty is for sci-fi. It’s a hilarious evolution of the genre that doesn’t just breathe fresh life into a stagnant corpse, but turns it into a lively, brain-eating dynamo that runs laps around its peers.” And it’s not too scary, so I’m watching, too. Netflix has also added Ratu Ratu Queens: The Series, a 2025 Indonesian series.this tells of four Indonesian immigrants- Party, Ance, Biyah, and Chintain-who find themselves becoming roommates and friends, to afford the high price of living in New York City. Party is trying to make it in the restaurant business, but can’t advance further without a green card, while Chinta’s husband wants a divorce, and Ance tries to deal with her daughter Eva‘s Americanization. And Biyah deals with her betrayal her best friend Tuti while new in the city. But the four women, previously isolated and alienated, find acceptance and forgiveness among their friends, that make their problems easier to bear, and maybe even to solve. Narina Zubir, Tika Panggabean, Asri Welas and Happy Salma also star, and there are 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a whopping 8.1/10 on IMDb, and Kristi Kar of Film Fugitives says this “show about the daily lives of “Aliens” hits the spot.” And I totally agree, so I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Mobius, a 2025 Chinese sci-fi thriller series. Here, when Detective Ding Qi(Bai Jingting) gains the ability to travel back in time, after an accident, he uses it to help prevent crimes. But then a murderer suspect named “Squid” appears, and Ding Qi fears he mays have the same time travelling ability. And with deaths rise at a genetic biotechnology plant, Qi worries that Squid may be setting a lethal trap for him. Janice Man, Liu Yijun, Zhang Bojia, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, and Song Yang also star, and there are 7 episodes available now, with 9 more to come. And this series gets a stunning 8.8/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times says “it is great and different from the other loop-related stories that we have watched before….and a must-watch!” So I’m definitely watching.
AMAZON
Amazon‘s big title added this week is Gen V, it’s in house superhero/action adventure series. This finds most of young heroes returning, all except for Andre(Chance Perdomo) who died trying to save himself and his friends, last season. And so his friends are forced to return to Godolkin University, and renounce any affiliation with Andre, or Marie(Jaz Sinclair). But, Marie is still free, having fled before Andre was killed, and is fighting the good fight against Homelander (Antony Starr) supporters. But she’s but being tailed by Starlight (Erin Moriarty), and Marie’s secrets might finally be revealed. Elizabeth Broadway, London Thor, and Derek Luh also star, and there are 3 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a smashing 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.6/10 on IMDb. And Sarah Dempster of the Guardian said “Gen V is aware of its own limited relevance in the grand scheme of things but has embraced its small role with pluck and charm.” So it’s on my list. But Amazon has also added Love Hurts, the 2025 romcom/thriller. Ke Huy Quan(!) stars as Marvin Gable, a mild-mannered Milwaukee realtor , whose violent past resurfaces with the valentines of his old flame, Rose Carlisle(Ariana DeBose). After saving Rose‘s life years ago, Marvin quit his life as a hitman, but finds himself pulled back in when Rose reappears, and hitmen follow her to Marvin, determined to take his life. Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton and Daniel Wu also star, and Jonathan Eusebio directs. But this movie lacks a good script, and so gets only an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Kyle Smith of the Wall Street Journal said “Mr. Eusebio, meanwhile, has no feel for how to make dialogue work, how to set up a joke, how to keep the story moving smoothly or even how to coach his actors.” So I probably won’t tune in. And, finally, Amazon has season 1 of Honour, a 2019 Swedish drama series. this revolves around the Heder Law firm, which mainly represents female victims of violent crime. But when they represent teenage rape victim Isabel, who then commits a crime of her own, they are left with the quandary of whether to represent her. And that is just one of the many dilemmas the team faces. Julia Dufvenius, Anja Lundqvist and Alexandra Rapaport also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.5/10 on IMDb, and though I can find no reviews of it yet, it’s so compelling, I’m tuning in. but this series goes back to the premium viaplay channel in just 11 days, so I’ll have start bingeing now!!
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
