And, of course, a romance could be in the cards for the pair. Inanna Sarkis, Rob Rausch and Jim Gaffigan also star, and Lacey Uhlemeyer directs. But it gets a and Ruchika Bhat of Digital Mafia Talkies says “I really didn’t want to be so negative in this review, because I try to maintain that movies are hard to make and there might be something likeable about them underneath all the garbage. However, Maintenance Required tested my patience.” And I’m no9t tuning in. Luckily, Amazon also has John Candy: I Like Me, the 2025 documentary. This movie provides a warm, intimate look at the legendary comic, John Candy, through the use of rare and never-before-seen archive footage, outtakes, private home video, and interviews with friends and relatives. Stars like Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Dan Ackroyd tell their inside stories of the man they loved and lost too soon. And his widow and two children also tell heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) tales of Candy, along with telling of his difficulty with anxiety. Cynthia Erivo even sings the cover song Every time You Go Away from me, and director Colin Hanks shows the personal side of Candy and allows the interviewees plenty of latitude to express themselves. And the archival footage, some never before seen, makes it all so enjoyable, if bittersweet. And this movie premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and gets a rousing 8.4/10 on IMDb, and Michael Rechtshaffen of the Hollywood Reporter calls it a “big-hearted documentary that’s as embracing and generous of spirit as the man himself.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Dedicated to her father, she abides by his wishes, but when her uncle shows up with his son Edward (Chris Walley) and daughter Emily (Holly Sturton), in tow, it becomes clear he is a devious man. In fact, he bullies her to marry Edward, thereby gaining her fortune, and if that doesn’t work, there’s always an asylum for hysterical women he can send her to. But unfortunately for him, he underestimates Maud and her own determination to plot her own course. And it gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Leslie Felperin of the Guardian said “it insightfully reworks some classic feminist literary notions, filtered through a very 21st-century approach to period material with its unsettling score, jittery editing and nods to horror tropes.” And I am so tuning in.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
