Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has no interesting new adds this week, but they do have Werewolves, the 2024 horror flick. This begins a year after the world experienced a werewolf pandemic brought on by a super-moon, with Dr. Wesley Marshall(Frank Grillo!), of the CDC, working to prevent it from happening again. With another super-moon impending, Marshall’s lab is working frantically to come up with a solution, even coming up with a moonscreen(!). But soon, Dr. Marshall and his colleague Amy(Katrina Law) are on the run, without knowing who will turn into a monster, next. Ilfenesh Hadera, James Michael Cummings and Lou Diamond Phillips also star, while Steven C. Miller directed. And this movie gets a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Owen Gleiberman of Variety said “it’s not a good movie, but it’s a tight little time passer. Frank Grillo, who’s at the center of it (playing a ripped bruiser who is also… a molecular biologist!), has a way of making any pulp movie better.” You decide. Hulu has also added Entrepreneurs, a 2025 Disney+ Mexican comedy series. This finds Gonzalo(Rober Bodegas), struggling to make his mark, as the son of a millionaire, whose siblings always outshine him. So when he comes up with the idea for a coworking space for entrepreneurs to work, with Jacobo ( Alberto Casado ), called the No Comfort Zone, he is convinced he has finally found his path. But after months of the endeavor, Gonzalo wonders if it was a good idea at all. Aura Garrido, Luis Bermejo and Victoria Martín also star, and there are 10 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.3/10 on IMDb, and Pablo Veiga Carpintero of Cinemagravia says it’s a “a satirical comedy that puts its finger on the sore spot of fake entrepreneurship.” And I’m tuning in. Hulu also offers Mesa de Regalos, a 2024 Disney+ romcom. Here, best friends (and confirmed bachelors), Antonia (Cassandra Sánchez-Navarro) and Nicolás (José Eduardo Derbez), find themselves bored with their lives, and wishing they had the money to fund their dreams. So, when they see the haul of gifts their friends receive upon marrying, Nicolás comes up with a plan. They will enter into marriage together, simply for the gifts, and come away with a bundle through their marriage registry. What could go wrong? Verónica Bravo, Gustavo Egelhaaf, and Ariel López Padilla also star, and Noé Santillán-López directed. And this movie was nominated for Best Feature Film at the 2024 Morelia International Film Festival , and gets a 6.5/10 on IMDb. So, though I can (as yet) find no online reviews, I’m tuning in.And, finally, Hulu has Vaazhai, a 2024 Disney+ Hindi coming of age drama. This tells of twelve year-old Sivanaindham(Ponvel), who has a back-breaking job of carrying bales of plantain leaves for a very low wage. The exhausting job consumes his life, taking all his energy and strength. So when he and his best friend get an unexpected day off, they grab the chance to get away from it all. Dhivya Dhuraisamy, Jsk Satish Kumar, Priyanka Nair and Kalaiyarasan also star, and Mari Selvaraj directed, along with writing the semi-autobiographical script. And this movie was nominated for 7 awards at the 2025 South Indian International Movie Awards, and went on to win two, Best Producer and Best Supporting Actor for Kalaiyarasan. And it gets a rousing 7.7/10 on IMDb, and Farhad Delal of Popcorn Reviews calls it “a hard-hitting satire masked as a coming-of-age drama that makes for a brilliant watch.” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has few big titles added this week, but they do have hidden gems like Amsterdam Empire, a 2025 Dutch crime drama series. Here, Betty Van Doorn(Famke Janssen!), the long suffering wife of Jack Van Doorn (Jacob Derwig), finds her world upended when she catches Jack cheating. Worse, he wants a divorce to marry the (pregnant) woman, and Betty is indignant. But Jack, owner of The Jackal, the largest coffee shop chain in the city, has secrets of his own, and Betty knows them all. And his darkest secret is a large-scale cannabis operation, which is still illegal in the Netherlands. And Betty threatens to make it all come tumbling down. Elise Schaap, Jade Olieberg and Jesse Mensah also star, and there are 7 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.3/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it , adding it’s “going to ride on the strength of Janssen’s performance, and we like what we see so far.” And I’m watching. Netflix has also added The Woman in the Line, a 2025 Argetinian drama. Based on a true story, this tells of Andrea Casamento(Natalia Oreiro), a widowed mom whose 18 year-old son, Matías (Juan Pedro Rodríguez Isturiz) is suddenly arrested, during a violent raid on their home. Told he was arrested for theft, she is not allowed to see him, and he is transferred to a maximum security facility. Undeterred and incensed, Andrea goes to court with her lawyer, Emilio (Luis Campos), and learns of the charges, which she cannot believe. So she digs for answers by herself, meets with other mothers of prisoners, and goes on to found the group Civil Association of Relatives of Detainees (ACiFaD),staying involved even after the charges against her son were dropped for lack of evidence. lberto Ammann, Amparo Noguera and Lide Uranga also star, while Benjamín Ávila directs. And this movie gets a positive 6.8/10 on IMDb, and Juan Pablo Russo of EscribiendoCine calls it “one of the most uncomfortable and necessary portraits in recent Argentine cinema.…poised to be one of the most significant Argentine cinematic offerings of 2025.” Netflix also newly offers In the Heights, the 2021 musical. Based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, this tells of a New York city neighborhood in Washington Heights, and the bodega where Usnavi(Anthony Ramos) works with his cousin Sonny (Gregory Diaz IV). Usnavi is sweet on Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), who works in a salon, and dreams of moving downtown to working in high fashion. But the neighborhood is full of dreamers, people like Kevin Rosario (Jimmy Smits), who wants his daughter Nina (Leslie Grace) to succeed. And as Nina comes home for the summer from Stanford, she and her ex Benny (Corey Hawkins) circle each other, and dream of things yet to be. Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz and Daphne Rubin-Vega also star, and Jon M. Chu(!) directed. And this movie won multiple awards in 2022, including Best Action Choreography and Best Ensemble Cast at the Seattle Film Critics Society, and Best Picture at the Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards. And it gets a sparkling 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.2/10 on IMDb. And A.O. Scott of the New York Times said “it’s a piece of mainstream American entertainment in the best sense – an assertion of impatience and faith, a celebration of communal ties and individual gumption, a testimony to the power of art to turn struggles into the stuff of dreams.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix has also added The Dream Life of Mr. Kim, a 2025 K-drama dramedy series. Ryu Seung-ryong plays the title character, here, Kim Nak-su, a middle-aged corporate manager whose dreams of advancement and promotion may not come to pass, after all. And as he’s sacrificed his family life for his work, things at home are far from perfect, with his wife Ha-jin (Myung Se-bin) and son Su-gyeom (Cha Kang-yoon) questioning his authority. But Mr. Kim’s ruminations, especially after after meeting his high-school sweetheart, Han-na (Lee Jin-yi), lead him to wonder what success really is after all, and whether he might already be more successful than he realized. Yoo Seung-mok, Lee Seo-hwan, and Lee Shin-ki also star, and there are 3 episodes available now, with 7 more to come. and this series gets a 6.4/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it , adding it “combines flashbacks, some really effective comedic writing, and a lot of first-person existential stress as it tracks big changes in the lives of its main character and his family.” And, finally, Netflix has added The Asset, a 2025 Danish spy drama series. This begins with the death of an undercover agent with the Dutch PET agency, who in fact, was murdered by the drug organization he had infiltrated. So, the head of the PET, Folke (Nicolas Bro), goes to the police academy to find a new candidate, and finds Tea Lind (Clara Dessau) a suitable candidate. After he tests Tea, Folke sets up a cover for her as a jeweler, and directs her to befriend the drug kingpin’s girlfriend, Ashley (Maria Cordsen) . But as Tea and Ashley become friends, and Tea feels a real bond with the woman, she finds her own deception more and more difficult to live with. Afshin Firouzi, Soheil Bavi, and Arian Kashef also star, and there are 6 episodes available now. And this series gets an impressive 7.1/10 on IMDb, and Juan Pablo Russo of EscribiendoCine says “without attempting to reinvent the genre, The Asset stands out for its narrative precision and its understated perspective on the loss of identity.” So I’m definitely watching.
AMAZON
Amazon has a huge add this week with Hedda, a 2025 adaptation of the Ibsen classic Hedda Gabler. Tessa Thompson(!) stars as the newly reimagined Hedda Gabler, newly married to George (Tom Bateman), an academic desperately in need of a promotion (and a higher wage). So they host a party for his superiors, aiming to butter people up, and all is well, until Hedda’s old friend Eileen (Nina Hoss) arrives hoping to land the same job as George. And as the party progresses, it becomes clear that Hedda‘s fiery past has not been extinguished. And it might just be rekindled, at the party, to engulf them all. Mirren Mack, Imogen Poots, Nicholas Pinnock, and Finbar Lynch also star, while Nia DaCosta directs. And this movie was nominated for numerous awards this year, and went on to win the Spotlight Award for Thompson at the 2025 Gotham Awards and the Actress Award for Film for Thompson at the Critics Choice Awards Celebration of Cinema & Television. And it gets an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Wendy Ide of the Observer (UK) says “it’s as treacherous and unpredictable as Hedda herself. Not everything works, but Thompson is glorious – all weaponised ennui, languid malice and impeccable tailoring.” and I’m tuning in. Amazon has also added The Woman in the Yard, the 2025 horror movie. Here, the widowed Ramona(Danielle Deadwyler!), is trying to recover from the loss of her husband in a car crash that left her with a broken leg and trauma, while also raising her two kids Tay (Peyton Jackson) and Annie (Estella Kahiha). But with the bills past due, the electricity is cut off, Ramona looks out the window, to see an old women wrapped in black shrouds, sitting in a chair on the lawn. That woman doesn’t know why she’s there, but she does tells Ramona ‘Today’s the day.” And as a panicked Ramona boards up the house, and tries to protect her children and herself, it seems obvious the worst is yet to come. Okwui Okpokwasili, Chad Pitter and Russell Hornsby also star, and Jaume Collet-Serra(Orphan) directs. And this movie gets a 40% on rotten Tomatoes, and Dwight Brown of DwightBrownInk.com says it “can creep out an audience but is less deft with freak-me-out horror.” Which is still too scary for me.And, finally, Amazon has added Restless, a 2024 British psychological thriller. This takes place in the suburbs, where Nickie(Lyndsey Marshal) lives, working hard as a nurse, and practicing yoga and listening to classical music to relax. But then an obnoxious new neighbor Deano (Aston McAuley), moves in, playing loud music and having parties every night, insensitively ignoring Nickie‘s pleas for some quiet. And as her efforts at sleep are useless, with her agitation grows greater everyday, Nickie begins to dream of revenge. Barry Ward, Gillian Daniels and Barry Ward also star, and Jed Hart directs. And this movie was nominated for Best Thriller at the 2025 National Film Awards, and gets an astounding 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Donald Clarke of the Irish Times said it “pitches the tone perfectly. The build from irritation to fury to desperation progresses at a steady pace. Black Hitchcockian humour … is supplemented by Ward’s comic turn as a bumbler who offers his pal charmingly hopeless assistance.” And I’m watching.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
