Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has an big add this week with Ella McCay, the2025 dramedy from James L. Brooks. Ella McCay(Emma Mackey) finds herself made governor after her mentor, Governor Bill (Albert Brooks), leaves for a job in Washington. And Ella has great ambitions and ideas, but she is weighted down by unseemly problems for a politician, like a deadbeat dad, (Woody Harrelson), and an irresponsible husband, (Spike Fearn). Luckily, she has her protective Aunt Helen(Jamie Lee Curtis), and her own tenacity, that will see her through any tough time. Rebecca Hall, Ayo Edebiri(!), Kumail Nanjiani(!) and Julie Kavner(!) also star, and Brooks directed, along with writing the script. But this movie only gets a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, but some critics, like Nell Minow of RogerEbert.com, liked it, saying “its optimism is so refreshing, its dialogue so smart, and its characters and performances so endearing, it well rewards a watch.” You decide. But Hulu has also added Splitsville, the 2025 comedy. Here, Carey (Kyle Marvin) and his wife Ashley (Adria Arjona) are on the brink of breaking up, after Ashley admits having an affair, asking for a divorce. After Carey hysterically runs off, he finds himself at the house of his best friend Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) and his wife Julie (Dakota Johnson), who tell him of their own open marriage, encouraging him to try it. But after Paul tells his friend that he wouldn’t care if anyone slept with Julie, not even Carey, himself, well you know what happens. And chaos ensues, with jealousy and insecurity putting everyone at each others throats. Simon Webster, David Castañeda and Nahéma Ricci also star, and Michael Angelo Covino directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2026 , including Best Screenplay at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and gets an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Katie Walsh of the Tribune News Service said, “Covino’s filmmaking is tremendously appealing, buoyant and playful, and in Splitsville, he dials everything up from The Climb, especially the comedy.” So it’s on my list. Hulu also offers 1000 Babies, a 2024 Indian Hindi psychological thriller series. This begins in 2010, with retired nurse Sara Ouseph(Neena Gupta) living a secluded life in Kottayam, with her grown introverted son, Bibim( Sirajudheen Nazar). But Sara is obviously ridden with guilt, and when she finally tells Bibim about her past, it shatters their lives, and sets him on a dark murderous course. And when an actress is found dead, CI Aji Kurian (Rahman)sets off to discover the identity of her killer. Adil Ibrahim, Ashwin Kumar, Sanju Sivram and Joy Mathew also star, and there are 7 episodes available now. And this series gets an impressive 7/10 on IMDb, and Gayathri Krishna of OTT Play called it a “well-crafted crime thriller that keeps viewers glued to their seats, thanks to the performances.” So it’s on my list. And, finally, Hulu has El Aroma del Pasto Recién Cortado, a 2024 Argentine drama. Called the The Freshly Cut Grass in English, this tells two parallel tales of infidelity, with Pablo(Joaquín Furriel), a professor of agronomy, married to Carla (Romina Peluffo), while romancing his student, Luciana (Verónica Gerez). And Natalia(Marina de Tavira), another married professor of agronomy at the same university, who’s also flirting with her student, Gonzalo (Emanuel Parga).And as the affairs progress, we see the havoc and chaos that gradually results, with their spouses and their children. Luciana Grasso, Alfonso Tort and Diego Starosta also star, and Celina Murga directs. And this movie, produced by Martin Scorsese, was nominated for multiple awards, and won the International Narrative Feature at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, and gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and Mae Abdulbaki of Screen Rant called it “deeply fascinating & engaging, “adding, it “delivers excellent, layered performances showcasing character depth & parallel scenarios.” And I am so tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has few big titles added this week, but they do have hidden gems like Even if This Love Disappears Tonight, a 2026 K-drama romance. Here, high school student Seo-yoon(Shin Si-a) is left with anterograde amnesia after a horrible car crash. So each day when she wakes up, she starts it anew, with no memory of the days before. As a result she finds herself isolated, and unable to make friends easily. Then she meets Jae-won(Choo Young-woo), who is determined to befriend her, no matter the cost. Jo Yoo-jung, Jin Ho-eun and Jo Han-chul also star, while Kim Hye-young directed. And this movie get a sparkling 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Greg Wheeler of the Review Geek calls it ” a quietly devastating and deeply affecting film.” So I’m tuning in. Netflix has also added Cash Queens, a 2026 French dramedy thriller series. Here, four women living on the edge are tired of trying to get by, not being able to afford their kids or their gifts, or debts. And ,while they first try shoplifting, one of them, Rosalie (Rebecca Marder), has her husband’s huge debt coming due to a drug lord, Ézéchiel (Olivier Rosemberg) , so they soon graduate to the idea of a bank heist. Disguised as men, they pull off their first heist, but find a league of troubles afterward, with the police and the mob after them. Jérémie Laheurte, Zoé Marchal, Sami Outalbali and Naidra Ayadi also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a respectable 6.2/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, calling it “a dramedy thriller that certainly leans on the funny side of its story, with a fun chemistry among the five women who get together to form an unlikely but very effective gang of bank robbers.” And I’m watching. Netflix also offers Becoming, the 2020 documentary. This tells the story of Michelle Obama’s life, with a concentration on her childhood growing up on Chicago’s South Side, while on her tour for her book Becoming. She tells of her family, especially her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, and the influence she had on her life. but she also stresses the positive influence we all can have, by opening up and showing love and acceptance for each other, regardless of our backgrounds. And we get the help of moderators like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Colbert and Conan O’Brien . And we get absorbing interviews with Marian Robinson, her brother Craig Robinson, and her former chief of staff, Melissa Winter. And this movie, directed by Nadia Hallgren, was nominated for 4 Emmys, and won the Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Motion Picture) at the 2021 Image Awards. And it gets a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.1/10 on IMDb. And Eric Deggans of NPR called it “a compelling documentary, offering a carefully revealing look at a whip smart, ferociously practical woman trying to understand how her historic time in the White House changed herself, her family and the nation.” And I’m definitely watching. Netflix has also added Unfamiliar, a 2026 German spy drama series. This tells of Meret and Simon Schäfer (Susanne Wolff and Felix Kramer, respectively) who are celebrating 16th birthday of their daughter, Nina (Maja Bons)when the series opens. But Simon is called away from the celebration, and Nina once again wonders at the nature of her parents lives. And with good reason, because her parents are secretly ex-agents with the German Foreign Intelligence Service, or the BND, helping to find haven for people in trouble. But as Meret begins to worry that one of their clients in the safe house is not all they seem, and may be an agent themselves, the couple gets pulled back into their dangerous profession. And their daughter Nina senses the danger, but also the deceit, inherent in her parents lives. Jeff Yanero, Marcellina Walker, and Landis Aponte also star, and there are 6 exciting episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a 6.6/10 on IMDb, and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, adding it’s “the rare thriller that lays out just enough story in its first episode to engage viewers, while leaving them in the dark about things without making them feel like they’re being manupulated.” And I’m definitely tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Unveil: Jadewind, a 2026 Chinese historical drama/mystery series. This follows Li Peiyi(Lu Bai), Princess of Fuchang County,and Xiao Huaijin(Xingyue Wang), deputy director of the Astronomical Bureau, who are ordered to investigate the death of a princess, during the Tang Dynasty. But more mysteries soon follow in the royal court, and the pair are up to the task before them. But can they solve the mystery that has long haunted Peiyi, the murder of her family, 15 years before? Yiqin Zhao, Ziqi Zhao and Miao Tian also star, and there are 8 episodes available now, with 2 more to come. And this series gets a smashing 8.2/10 on IMDb, and so, though I can find no online reviews, as yet, I’m definitely watching. You know I love a mystery.
AMAZON
Amazon has few interesting adds this week, but they do have Fabian and the Deadly Wedding, a 2026 German farcical mystery. Here, con artist Fabian(Bastian Pastewka), happens upon a fancy wedding party, and poses as a photographerto get in. But he really plans on stealing the priceless artifact, Venus of Wildenfeld(?!), to be given to the bride by her aunt. But then, a murder is committed, and the con man turns into police officer Fabian Kurtz , hoping to get the Venus under that guise. But as Fabian investigates, he finds himself getting more and more involved in the solving of the mystery, though it may endanger his life. Tamara Romera Ginés, Anton Dreger, Barbara Philipp, Ercan Durmaz, Mira Partecke, and Nicole Beutler also star, while Markus Sehr directs. And though this movie gets just a 5.5/10 on IMDb, LA Youth calls it a “fairly entertaining crime comedy.” You decide. Luckily, Amazon also offers Queen of Mars, a 2025 Japanese sci-fi series. This takes place in the year 2125, with Earth having colonized Mars, desperate for it’s mineral wealth, that is ruled by the ISDA (The Interplanetary Space Development Agency). But when the ISDA abruptly announces it’s leaving Mars, and talk of the Earth Repatriation Plan growing, unrest is brewing. And while the hunt for a mysterious object with great powers thought to be on Mars continues, police investigator Maru (Koharu Sugawara) hunts for a kidnapped woman, which may be connected to Mars rebels. Suri Lin, Masaki Suda, Yukino Kishii, Eun-Kyung Shim and Hio Miyazawa also star, and there are 3 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a healthy 6.8/10 on IMDb, and Mike Fu of the Japan Times says a “Japanese vision of interplanetary cosmopolitanism a century from now is an intriguing proposition of its own to merit a watch.” And the acting and special effects in this tense series are great, so I’m tuning in. And, finally, Amazon has added Sudden Marriage, a 2025 Japanese romance series. Also called Ikinari-kon, this tells of Mao Koshiba(Kyoko Saito), who finds herself married to her boss, Hajime Ando(Yu Shirota), after a break-up with her boyfriend led to a night of drinking. While Mao wants to annul the marriage, Ando talks her into waiting , giving the marriage a trial period. And while they keep the marriage a secret, her ex-boyfriend Kota seethes at the thought of another man in her life. Hikari Kabashima, Hinata Todo and Dai Watanabe also star, and there are 12 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets an incredible 7.7/10 on IMDb, so, though I can find no online reviews as yet, I’m watching.
