Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a major add this week with It Was Just an Accident, the award-winning 2025 Iranian drama. This movie revolves around Vahid(Vahid Mobasseri), a former political prisoner and car mechanic, who thinks he recognizes a customer as a former sadistic prison guard Peg Leg Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi). But as he kidnaps Eghbal off the streets of Tehran, planning to bury him alive, he begins to doubt himself, given he only recognizes the man from the sound his artificial leg makes, as it scrapes on the ground. So Vahid gathers up other former prisoners, and victims of Peg Leg, to get heir opinion, all the while keeping the man in a box in his van, with the Iranian police circling. Mariam Afshari, Hadis Pakbaten, and Majid Panahi also star, while master Jafar Panahi(!) directed. And this movie had it’s world premiere at the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or and the Prix de la Citoyenneté. It went on to win numerous other awards, like the Best Foreign Language Film at the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards and Best Director and Best International Feature at the 2025 Gotham Awards. And this movie is also nominated for two Oscars this Sunday(tomorrow!)- Best International Feature Film and Best Screenplay. And it gets an astounding 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Chase Hutchinson of the Seattle Times said “bursting with humanity and dark humor, it’s a sharply well-acted, written and directed modern thriller that grapples with urgently existential questions of justice, violence and resistance.” And I’m definitely tuning in. But Hulu has also added Sunny Nights, the 2025 dramedy series. Here, American brother and sister Martin Marvin (Will Forte) and Vicki (D’Arcy Carden!) find themselves in Sydney, staying at the crummy Sunny Days motel, and promoting their new tanning spray, Tansform. But after Martin spends the night with a beautiful woman, Susi (Jessica De Gouw), it turns out to be a scam, with sex tapes and all. And if Martin and Vicki don’t pay $10,000, she, and her handler Kash, will make their scandalous video public. And, unfortunately, Vicki is convinced she can handle the sleazy Kash, and the other toughs that make up his gang, who also room at the Sunny Days motel.Rachel House, Ra Chapman and Miritana Hughes also star, and there are 8 episodes available now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Richard Roeper of RogerEbert.com says “this dark, brutal, and devilishly funny crime caper [often] leaves us unsure of whether to cringe in horror or laugh. It’s usually a bit of both.” And I’m watching. Hulu also offers Anniversary, the 2025 political thriller. This begins with the anniversary party for professor EllenTaylor(Diane Lane!) and her husband, restaurateur Paul(Kyle Chandler!), with a beautiful outdoor party with all the trimmings. But when their son Josh(Dylan O’Brien) brings his fiancée Liz Nettles(Phoebe Dynevor), Ellen is thrown for a loop, recognizing Liz as a former student with whom she had troubling issues. As Liz proselytizes for a conservative book, the Cause, Josh falls more and more under it’s sway. And as Liz’ right wing group takes over the country, the Taylor family is roiled by chaos and violence. Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch, Mckenna Grace, and Daryl McCormack also star, and Jan Komasa directed. And this movie gets a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and David Ehrlich of IndieWire called it “taut and well-acted as this queasy little thriller can be, its unflinching tale of corporate authoritarianism is much too streamlined to reflect the emotional truth of watching totalitarianism in motion.” But a bit too tense for me. And, finally, Hulu offers Wonder Man, the 2026 Disney+ action/adventure series. This series focuses on struggling actor Simon Williams(Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who has been trying to a decade to get a good part in Hollywood, so when he gets a change to audition for Wonder Man, he leaps at it. But Simon has a tendency to overthink his roles, so when he meets veteran actor Slattery (Ben Kingsley!), he is happy for his help. But Slattery works for Department of Damage Control, a shadowy secret organization , which is interested in Simon. For the actor has superpowers he has kept hidden for years, fearing being shunned by Hollywood and society. Arian Moayed, X Mayo, and Olivia Thirlby also star, and there are 8 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and Amber Dowling of the Globe and Mail says “the actors’ chemistry and undeniable bromance is a great reason to watch, but this is also an entertaining and low-stakes story that doesn’t require mass MCU viewing or knowledge to fully enjoy.” So I’m watching.
NETFLIX
Netflix has very few adds this week, but the do have That Night, a 2026 Spanish drama series. Here, when her sisters visit Cris (Paula Usero), living in the Dominican Republic, they expect days on the beach, and nights partying. But then Elena (Clara Galle) gets a frantic call from Cris, about a dead body on her bumper. And when that body turns out to be that of a cop, the three sisters try to bury it, and all suspicion of a crime, on the beach. But without really knowing what happened to Cris that night, they all begin to wonder. Claudia Salas, Pedro Casablanc, and Nüll García also star, and there are 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And though this series gets but a 5.9/10 on IMDb, it also gets rave reviews , like of Charles Hartford of But Why Tho? who says it “delivers an incredible story that couldn’t be told any other way. Its shifting perspective and great cast of characters allow the viewer a unique look into family, the trauma, and the support it can bring.” so I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix also offers Boyfriend on Demand, a 2026 Kdrama romcom series. This finds webtoon artist Mi-rae(Jisoo) far too busy for real world dating, so when her company is approached about a virtual dating app called Boyfriend on Demand, she dives right in. But the app is such a perfect and involving fantasy, that she ignores her real social life. And she also ignores her co-worker, Park Gyeong-nam(Seo In-guk), who might criticize her work, but secretly carries a torch for her. Gong Min-jeung, Kim Ah-young, Park Hae-rin, Ha Young, and Han Ga-eul also star, too. And there are 10 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets an incredible 7.5/10 on IMDb, and Sarah Musnicky of But Why Tho? says it’s “the kind of delightfully humorous, rewarding KDrama romance I’ve been missing.” So it’s on my list. Netflix has also added Nuremburg, the 2025 historical drama. Here, U.S. Army psychiatrist Lt Col. Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek)is assigned to assess the mental status of Hermann Göring(Russell Crowe), and other Nazis, before the upcoming Nuremburg trials. But as Kelley spends hundreds of hours with the unrepentant Göring, expecting to find discrete signs of evil, he instead finds himself becoming increasingly closer to him than he had expected, while prosecutor Robert H. Jackson(Michael Shannon!) hopes to use Kelley‘s insights during his trial of the Nazi criminal. Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O’Brien, Richard E. Grant and Lydia Peckham also star, and James Vanderbilt directed. And this movie gets a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Wendy Ide of the Guardian said a “towering performance by Russell Crowe as the wily and charismatic Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring is the main reason to watch this solid, slightly ponderous period drama.” So it’s on my list. Netflix also offers Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere, a 2026 British documentary. Here, British documentarian Louis Theroux gets up close and (maybe too) personal with the young males who make millions selling extreme masculinity and misogyny. Theroux interviews numerous supposedly macho young males, making the big bucks streaming, advising young men on a host of subjects, on subjects like one-sided monogamy(?), and others. And while this may be revolting and upsetting subject matter, it’s also certainly important, given how the ‘manosphere’ influenced our recent election. And Theroux makes a point of challenging the views of some of these influencers, and how they make their money. And Adrian Choa directs this movie that gets an impressive 7.1/10 on IMDb, and Sam Haysam of Mashable calls it “disturbing but relevant viewing.” And I agree, so I’m tuning in. And, finally, Netflix has added Phantom Lawyer, a 2026 K-drama supernatural series. Here, after starting his own practice lawyer, Shin I-rang(Yoo Yeon-seok) begins to see spirits, in his new office, once held by a shaman. So he finds himself defending the resentful dead, in cases they never saw go to court. Luckily, a fellow lawyer Han Na Hyeon(Esom) decides to help him in his cause, and see the cases through to what will, hopefully, be a fruitful end. Kim Mi-kyung, Kim Kyung-Nam and Son Yeo-eun also star, and there are 2 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a whopping 9/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times calls it ” fun, gripping, and intriguing, and if you are a lover of legal drama, Phantom Lawyer is just the right watch for you.” And I’m tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon has a huge add this week with Scarpetta, the 2026 crime drama series. Based on Patricia Cornwell’s acclaimed crime series, this finds Dr. Kay Scarpetta(Nicole Kidman!) returning to work as Virginia’s chief medical examiner. And one of Scarpetta‘s first new cases is a woman who was the victim of a serial killer, whose MO seems to match that of a serial killer Kay put away years ago. So she investigates, along with her brother-in-law, the now retired cop Pete Marino(Bobby Cannavale!), while his wife, (and Kay’s sister), Dorothy (Jamie Lee Curtis!) grumbles about their actions. Rosy McEwen plays the younger Kay Scarpetta, and Ariana DeBose, Simon Baker and Jake Cannavale also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. But this series gets just a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, perhaps because it’s twin timeline can get a little confusing. Still Laura Miller of Slate says “Scarpetta works, perhaps against the odds, and it works splendidly.” But maybe I’ll read the book first. Luckily, Amazon also has A Little Prayer, a 2025 drama . Here, Vietnam vet and father Bill (David Strathairn!) and his wife Venida (Celia Weston!), find their empty nest, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, filling up with adult children again. And Bill finds himself especially torn, after learning that his adult son, David(Will Pullen), is having an affair. Bill wants to desperately to protect Tammy (Jane Levy), David’s wife, and also set his son straight, but Venida (Celia Weston!) advises against it. And, as the affair appears to continue, it stresses not only David‘s marriage, but Bill’s too, with no end in sight. Anna Camp, Viktor Hernandez and Billie Roy also star, while Angus MacLachlan(Junebug!) directed. And this movie premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com said “is like a beautiful hand-wrought sculpture that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Making it bigger would not have made it better. It’s perfect just as it is.” So I’m definitely watching. And, finally, Amazon has Island, a 2022 K-drama horror series. This takes place on Jeju island, where heiress Won Mi Ho(Lee Da-hee) is sent by her family, after causing a scene online. Mi ho comes to work as a guidance counselor, but instead, is attacked by a demon, when an enigmatic man name Ban (Kim Nam-gil) comes to her rescue. But she finds the island is inhabited by demons, and that only she, Ban and an Italian priest, can stop them from escaping the island, and invading the world. Cha Eun-woo, Ko Du-shim and Sung Joon also star, and there are 12 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets an impressive 7/10 on IMDb, and, so, though I can find few reviews online, I think it’s worth a watch. But with my eyes closed, because it’s too scary for me.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
