Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a huge add this week with Sentimental Value, the 2025 award-winning drama. This movie begins the actress Nora(Renate Reinsve!) rattled by the recent death of her mom, Sissel, only to find it brings her estranged father, Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård!), back to Norway, to claim the family home. She and her married sister, Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleas) are remain bitter toward him, so when Gustav offers a new script for Nora to star in, she refuses. So her father insensitively offers the role to another actress, Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning!), who desperately tries to mold herself into another Nora. But as Agnes does some digging into family history, she learns much about Gustav and the subject of his movie, which may help the daughters better understand their father. Jesper Christensen, Ida Marianne Vassbotn Klasson and Lena Endre also star, and Joachim Trier directed. And this movie premiered at the the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the won the Grand Prix Award. It went on to win numerous other awards, including Best European Film at the Goya Awards, and was nominated for 9 Oscars, winning Best International Feature Film there. And it gets a shining 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and said “Trier deftly explores how familial trauma is held deep within the hearts, unwittingly passed along by generation and through the spaces we live in.” And I’m definitely tuning in. Hulu also offers Billy Idol Should Be Dead, a 2025 documentary. This tells of the chaotic and dangerous life of William Broad, or punk rocker Billy Idol, as most of us know him. As the movie deals with Idol’s rise to stardom, and his big hits, it also deals with his 1984 overdose, and his motorcycle accident that almost cost him his leg. We get music stars like Miley Cyrus and Billie Joe Armstrong telling of Idol’s influence in their musical careers. And director Jonas Åkerlund even approaches some of the more serious issues in the rocker’s life through animation and music. And this movie gets a rousing 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Pat Stacey of the Irish Independent said “that [Billy Idol is] alive and well and the subject of musician/director Jonas Åkerlund’s fantastically entertaining and sometimes quietly moving two-hour documentary is a reason to be happy.” So it’s on my list. Hulu has also added Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, the 2026 movie. Here, Miley Cyrus returns to the set of her iconic TV series, and relives her experiences there. She is also interviewed Alex Cooper, and shares some intimate secrets. Her mom Tish Cyrus, dad Billy Ray Cyrus, and Selena Gomez even make appearances, and Cyrus sings three of her biggest Hannah Montana hits. And this movie gets a 6.8/10 on IMDb, and Samantha Nungesser of the Decider says to stream it, adding “Hannahversary is every Hannah Montana fan’s dream (dream, dream).” If you’re a fan, you won’t want to miss it. And, finally, Hulu has added Malpractice, a 2025 British drama series. Season 1 finds Dr Lucinda Edwards(Niamh Algar) under intense scrutiny, and facing malpractice charges after a wild night in the ER at the Yorkshire Royal Hospital. For as Dr Edwards made the vital decisions about which cases to prioritize that night, a life was lost, and Sir Anthony Owusu (Brian Bovell), lodges a complaint. But who is really to blame for what happened, if anyone is to blame at all? Simon Naylor, James Purefoy and Priyanka Patel also star, and there are 2 seasons, with 10 episodes total, available now. And this series won Best Actor for Algar and Best Drama at the 2024 Royal Television Society Yorkshire Awards, and gets a 7.2/10 on IMDb. And Ty’Kira Smalls of Common Sense Media called it “complex, topical, and thrilling.” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
Netflix has great new Nordic Noir added this week, with Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole, a 2026 Norwegian crime drama series. This follows Oslo police detective Harry Hole(Tobias Santelmann), trying to maintain his sobriety and healthy relationships, while trying to solve the latest in what appear to be a string of serial murders. As the victims pile up, all marked with a red diamond, Hole also has to deal with his growing suspicions that his partner Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman), is on the take. And as the situation becomes more and more dangerous, Hole‘s grip on sobriety begins to loosen. Pia Tjelta, Ellen Helinder, and Anders Baasmo also star, and there are episodes available now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Kelcie Mattson of Collider calls it a “roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride that lives up to the promises baked into the thriller subgenre’s name, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole delivers virtually everywhere it should — which is nothing less than what a modern legend deserves.” So I’m definitely tuning in. But Netflix also offers Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a 2026 horror series. Here, the independent Rachel(Camila Morrone) impulsively decides to marry Nicky(Adam DiMarco), but as the wedding approaches, she begins to have apprehensions about it all. And as she travels to his family’s home in the woods, and meets his strange family, including his mother, Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh!), Rachel‘s misgivings grow into outright fear. But can she escape her fate, with the wedding looming? Ted Levine, Gus Birney and Jeff Wilbusch also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a respectable 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter says it “excels at casting a spell through odd details, nasty red herrings, disturbing clues. And underlying them all is an unexpectedly sincere exploration of what true love can or should feel like.” But it’s still too scary for me. Luckily, Netflix has also added The Red Line, a 2026 Thai thriller. Here, when three women, Orn, Wow, and Fai, find they have all been taken by the same phone scam, losing most of their savings, they decide to work together get revenge. So they decide to find out who the scammers are and get their money back. But can they do that, and still stay safe? Nittha Jirayungyurn, Esther Supreeleela, Ning Chutima Maholakul and Tonhon Tantivejakul also star, while Sitisiri Mongkolsiri directs. And this movie gets a 6.1/10 on IMDb, and Archi Sengupta of Leisure Byte says “socially relevant and well-acted drama that is extremely thrilling.” So I’m watching. Netflix also offers Anemone, a 2025 British psychological drama. This finds the reclusive veteran Ray Stoker(Daniel Day-Lewis!), living alone in a cabin in the forest, suddenly visited by his brother Jem(Sean Bean). And Jem brings letters from Ray’s wife, whom he abandoned, along with his son, years before. And Jem wants Ray to return home, and help his troubled son, but with Ray still resenting his brother, a reunion may not come to pass. Samuel Bottomley and Samantha Morton also star, while Ronan Day-Lewis directed. And this movie gets a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian said “a movie with, in the Scots phrase, no small opinion of itself; a movie of big scenes, big performances, big images, epiphanies and hallucinations. Not all of them work, but the presence of Day-Lewis settles and moors it.” so count me in. And, finally, Netflix has added The Last Beergin, a 2025 Filipino comedy. Here, five strangers meet in a convenience store, and wind up sharing drinks together in a bar. And though they seem disparate people, with little in common, as they spend time together and talk, they find they have much more common ground than they realized. JC Santos, Cherry Pie Picache, Pepe Herrera, Zaijian Jaranilla and Xyriel Manabat also star, and Nuel C. Naval directed. And this movie gets an astounding 7.6/10 on IMDb, so though I can find few reviews, I’m watching.
AMAZON
Amazon has an exciting add this week with Bait, the 2026 comedy series. Here, London-based actor Shah Latif (Riz Ahmed!) ,who learns he has a chance to play the next James Bond. But his audition doesn’t go as well as planned, so he decides to start a rumor that he’s getting the part. Which brings even more trouble, from racist threats online and off, and brown-skinned activists like his ex, Yasmin Khan(Ritu Arya), who don’t think he should take the job at all. And Latif‘s life is left in chaos, no matter what the outcome. Weruche Opia, Himesh Patel, Sheeba Chaddha and Guz Khan also star, and there are 6 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and on Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times says its “at once satirical and celebratory; “Bait” feels abundant, both in its presentation of a culture, which has the ring of documentary truth, and as a beautifully realized work of art.” And I’m so tuning in. Amazon has also added Mercy, the 2026 futuristic thriller. Here, in 2029, L.A. P.D. detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt) himself charged with his wife’s murder, after a night of drinking. After his DNA was found all over the crime scene, AI Judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson) tells Raven he has 90 minutes to prove to the court he is not guilty, or he will be immediately executed. And since Raven has no memory of the night, he has very little to go on. Annabelle Wallis, Kylie Rogers and Kali Reis also star, and Timur Bekmambetov directs. But this movie gets a paltry 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Adam Nayman of The Ringer calls it a “high concept brought low by middling execution; an allegory about our tendency to rush to judgment made without conviction. But not without its pleasures, guilty or otherwise.” And I won’t be watching. And, finally, Amazon has added Pretty Lethal, a 2026 action thriller. Here, five dancers with the Los Angeles Ballet are on their way to a competition in Budapest, when their bus breaks down. When they decide to walk to town, they find the Teremok Inn, run by Devora Kasimer(Uma Thurman!), the dancers are welcomed in. But then, the women witness some sinister scenes at the hotel, and as they are the only witnesses, they have to fight their way out. Iris Apatow, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, Avantika, and Maddie Ziegler also star, and Vicky Jewson directs. And this movie gets a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com calls it a “movie with one banger of an action sequence surrounded by thin characters, flat plotting, and even a boring climax.” And violent, too, so probably not for me.
So sit back and binge this weekend, on classics, old and new, on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Enjoy!
