Yes, we’re already a few days into December, so let’s get at them! There are a lot of good new shows out there, and I’m going to include a couple not so new, in case you missed them. Let’s start with Hulu!
Streaming on Hulu
First, you have to see Silence, a Martin Scorsese movie of 2016. Starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver , Liam Neeson, and Tadanobu Asano. It’s a drama about two Jesuit priests spreading Catholicism that got rave reviews. And there’s a great indie movie, The Hero, with Sam Elliott, Laura Prepon, and Krysten Ritter. It’s a wonderful movie and a great opportunity to seem some older actors and actresses that regrettably don’t get much screen time any more. Next, there’s Apocalypse Now, Redux (2001), a classic movie. Roger Ebert gave it five stars among it’s many rave reviews. And there’s also Colossal, with Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. I knows, technically it was added in November, but it’s such a great movie and November was SO busy, I figured I’d mention it. And, finally, Hulu has Marvel’s Runaway’s, with Virginia Gardner, Lyrica Okano and Ariela Barer. I haven’t seen it, but it gets 7.5 stars on IMDB, and it’s Marvel, so there you go.
New to Netflix
The most exciting December premiere for me is Dark, a German production for Netflix. It’s a thriller that stars Louis Hofmann, Oliver Masucci and Maja Shonne . If you like Stranger Things, and who doesn’t, you’ll want to check this out. Again, missing children is part of the theme, but it’s definitely original, so give it a go. You might prefer subtitles to the rather poor dubbing, you can change that pretty easily in the right hand corner of the screen. Next, I suggest My Happy Family, another import, this time from Georgia. It stars Ia Shugliashvili, Merab Ninidze and Berta Khapava, and again, gets rave reviews. It’s an understated story of a 50 year old woman leaving her husband and family. But if you want American productions, have no fear, Netflix has you covered. Topping my list is Godless, a Western featuring women, no less. It stars Michelle Dockery, Jeff Daniels and Sam Waterston. And finally, there is Guardians of the Galaxy 2, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Kurt Russell. Written and directed by James Gunn, it’s more fun from the Marvel universe.
December on Amazon Prime
First on the list is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, directed by Amy Sherman Palladino, creator of the Gilmore Girls. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, Michael Zegen and Tony Shalhoub, it’s the story of housewife turned stand-up comedian, after her husband leaves her. It’s great, thus far. Next, there is The Circle, with Emma Watson , Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton. It is adapted from Dave Eggers 2013 book about Mae Holland(Emma Watson) and her rise through the tech company, The Circle. Amazon also has Fearless, starring Helen McCrory, Jonathan Forbes and Wunmi Mosaku. Another Amazon Original, it’s a British thriller about a woman lawyer, Emma Banville (McCrory) trying to free a man she thinks is innocent. Martin Scorsese’s Silence is also on Amazon Prime. And if you haven’t caught it yet, Arrival is still available, starring Amy Adams in a great science fiction movie. So tune in or miss out, on this month’s streaming!
