Musical New Year’s Eve
If you crave something musical , look to Netflix. They have something for everyone, young and old. First, if you crave the fifties, there’s Grease. Yes, that’s right, John Travolta, Olivia Newton John and Jeff Conaway, in the classic musical from the seventies. And don’t put it off, because it leaves Netflix January 1! And if you want something a little more elegant, Netflix offers Tony Bennett: The Music Never Ends. It’s a documentary, but with plenty of classic Bennett songs. And, Netflix also has Joe Cocker:Mad Dog with Soul. It too, is a documentary, but with plenty of clips of Joe Cocker at his best. It can be a little sad, though, so be forewarned. If Lady Gaga is a favorite, there is Gaga: Five Foot Two, a recent addition to Netflix. Finally, there is the one and only Barbra Streisand, with Barbra: The Music…The Mem’ries..The Magic! It has 1 hour and 48 minutes of Streisand’s tour in Miami. And, don’t forget, if you have kids, Netflix has their New Year’s Eve Countdown for Kids, with Trollhunters and Puffin Rock and much more! And you can stream it early, so you have some time for yourself on New Year’s Eve.
Classic Film Night
And finally, if you miss Turner Classic Movies, you could always stream it through SlingTv, as I do, but there are classics available streaming as well. Amazon Prime is streaming some great old movies this New Year’s Eve. First, among them, is
His Girl Friday, with Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant. With direction by Howard Hawks and a script by Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer, it’s witty and wonderful. Then there’s My Man Godfrey, with Carole Lombard and William Powell. A screwball comedy from 1936 directed by Gregory La Cava, it’s got a wonderful script and a great cast. It was also nominated for six Academy Awards. Again, with Cary Grant, Amazon has Penny Serenade, with Irene Dunne. This movie is a melodrama about a young couple’s attempt’s to have a baby and stay married. It gets 7.2 stars on imdb and is a great tearjerker. Finally, Amazon Prime offers The Kennel Murder Case, with William Powell and Mary Astor. It’s a Philo Vance mystery that was filmed pre-Hayes Code, so it’s a little saltier than later post-code movies.
So you don’t need to miss out, because you gave up cable. Streaming has plenty to offer for New Year’s Eve, so tune in and veg out, for your holiday!
