There were some exciting shows and movies added to streaming this week, so let’s get right to it!
Hulu
There are few new additions on Hulu this week, but there are few wonderful gems available, including River of Grass, director Kelly Reichert‘s film debut, from 1994. It stars Lisa Bowman and Larry Fessenden as a pair of hopeless lovers, who set out to be robbers, only to be charged for a crime they didn’t commit. If you love Reichert‘s Wendy and Lucy and Meek’s Cutoff (also available on Hulu), than give River of Grass a try, it’s not as good, but still worth seeing. And it got 3/4 stars on RogerEbert.com. Also on new on Hulu is Mystery Team, from 2009. It’s from the comedy team Derrick Comedy and stars Donald Glover, DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Ellie Kemper(Kimmy Schmidt). It’s about a bunch of kids who were like Encyclopedia Brown, but come to investigate a real murder(a pair, actually). I don’t remember hearing of this, but the cast is great, I mean Donald Glover of Atlanta! And the movie a 6.8/10 on IMDb! And finally, new on Hulu is Thunder Soul, presented by Jamie Foxx. It’s a 2011 movie about a Texas high school jazz band that reunites to honor their teacher. It’s a documentary directed by Mark Landsman and gets a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5/10 on IMDb. I’ll watch.
Netflix
The biggest new addition to Netflix this week is their new Netflix series Lost in Space, starring Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Max Jenkins, Taylor Russell and Parker Posey. A remake of a sci-fi classic from the sixties, it has amazing special effects and looks exciting! The ratings are good on IMDb at a 7.2/10, but it looks like a wonderful show for a science fiction addict like me! Oh, but although this is a family show, it looks like it could get pretty scary for younger kids, so be forewarned. And a movie that grownups excited about is Come Sunday, a movie starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as a doubting bishop. The movie is actually adapted from a This American Life episode, and features the true story of Carlton Pearson(Ejiofor) and his struggles with belief as he preaches at a Tulsa Evangelical megachurch. It also stars Danny Glover, Martin Sheen and Condola Rashad. The New York Times calls Ejiofor “superb” in this movie, and it is a really stirring, uplifting movie. And, finally, on Netflix is Money Heist, a 2 part 2017 series from Spain. It’s about eight thieves, who lock themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain. With hostages. It stars Ursula Corbero, Itziar Ituno, Alvaro Morte and Maria Pedraza. The first episode is great and the series actually gets an 8.8/10 on IMDb!
Amazon Prime
The biggest new addition to amazon Prime this week is the new season of Bosch, the mystery about the LAPD detective of the same name. It’s adapted from the stories by Michael Connelly and features Hieronymus Bosch(played by Titus Welliver) whose mother was killed when he was a child. It’s a dark mystery series that also stars Jamie Hector, Madison Lintz and Amy Aquino. It’s a mystery I somehow missed, but no more, especially since it gets an 8.3/10 on IMDb! Also, new to Amazon is Howl, the 2010 movie starring James Franco. It is a biography of poet Allen Ginsberg, the beat generation poet so popular in the sixties and seventies. It also stars David Strathairn, Jon Hamm and Mary-Louise Parker. It gets a 6.8/10 on IMDb. That’s about all the new additions to Amazon except for the Pan-African Film Festival movies online. There are some very interesting movies listed there, including All About You, a movie starring Renee-Elise Goldsberry, Terron Brooks and Debbie Allen. It’s a love story and gets a 6.7/10 on IMDb. Also available is Devil in The Detail, a 2014 movie from Ghana and Nigeria. It is a romantic thriller about a married couple played by Nse Ikpe Etim and Adjetey Anang. It gets a 7.5/10 on IMDb. Other the movies from the Pan African Film Festival look intriguing, and you can find them all here.
And that’s all for this week’s new online streaming, so sit back and relax this weekend and binge on the great movies available online.
