Classics on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon!

If you’re having trouble finding older Hollywood classics on the big three streaming sites, like me, there are a few on each site I didn’t want you to miss! Like The Third Man, on Netflix, director Carol Reed’s tour de force mystery, starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Alida Valli and Trevor Howard. It had amazing black and white expressionist cinematography(by Robert Krasker) and it’s adapted from a novella by Graham Greene. Oh, and it was voted the best British movie by the British Film Institute, in 1999. And it gets a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Another older classic on Netflix is The Graduate, the 1967 comedy from Mike Nichols. It has an amazing cast, like Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katherine Ross, William Daniels and Buck Henry(who also co-wrote the script, won the Academy Award for directing for Nichols, and was nominated for 6 others. It also has great music, by Simon & Garfunkel. And it gets an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix has Cabaret, the 1972 musical drama directed by Bob Fosse. This one has a wonderful cast too, with Liza Minelli, Joel Grey. Michael York and Marisa Berenson, and a great story, based on the book Berlin Stories and the Broadway play I am a Camera. It won eight Academy Awards, including ones for Minelli, Fosse(director) and Joel Grey. And it gets a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Amazon has some great Hollywood classics as well, like Arsenic and Old Lace, Frank Capra’s hilarious masterpiece of 1944. It, too, has an amazing cast, with Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Josephine Hull, Jean Adair, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre and Jack Carson, and tells the craziest story ever. It’s one of the funniest movies ever, with one of Grant’s best comedic performances. And it gets an 8/10 on IMDb and an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Amazon also has The African Queen, the 1951 classic romantic adventure tale starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Here, Bogart and Hepburn play an ill-matched pair, trying to escape the WWI Germans, and get up the Ulanga River in Bogart’s rickety boat, the African Queen. It’s directed by John Huston and also stars Robert Morley, Theodore Bikel and Peter Bull. This movie won Bogart his only Academy Award and gets a well deserved 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. And, finally, Amazon offers To Catch a Thief, Hitchcock’s 1955 thriller. Again starring Cary Grant, this time as a retired cat burglar, John Robie, who has to catch a killer, to save his reputation, when cat burglar,imitating his MO, commits murder. Grace Kelly also stars, with Jessie Royce Landis, John Williams and Charles Vanel featured in the cast, as well. It won Robert Burks an Academy Award for best cinematography and was nominated for one other. And it gets a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was able to find nothing old and great on Hulu, but I’ll keep looking! But if you need Hollywood classics(and can’t afford a subscription to Criterion Channel), you can find some on Netflix , Hulu and Amazon Prime!
