There is a lot of good new movies to stream on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon, so let’s get right to it!
Hulu
The biggest new addition on Hulu is I, Tonya, the 2017 movie starring Margot Robbie(she also produced it). It’s a mockumentary bio pic about Tonya Harding, the figure skater, who, notably, was somehow connected to rival skater Nancy Kerrigan‘s attack. It enjoyed critical acclaim, and, of course, Allison Janney won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as Harding’ mom. And it gets a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Another big new title on Hulu is IT, the 2017 Stephen King horror movie about a shape shifting monster. It stars Jaeden Lieberher, Bill Skarsgard, Sophia Lillis and Finn Wolfhard(Stranger Things!) and is about some kids who are menaced by this thing. This is way too horrifying for me, even the trailers creep me out, but people who like horror, praise it. It gets an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.5/10 on IMDb. Oh, and there’s a part 2, coming next year. And, Brokeback Mountain has been added to Hulu‘s lineup, the 2005 romance directed by Ang Lee. It stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two cowboys who fall in love in Wyoming, in the 1960’s-80’s. It also stars Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway and Randy Quaid and won 3 Academy Awards, including Best Director for Lee. Hulu also added all the Lord of the Rings movies, starting with The Fellowship of the Ring. It stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan and Liv Tyler, just to name a few in an all-star cast, and is the story of Frodo Baggins’ and other hobbits quest, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic book of the same name. It won four Academy Awards, ranked 50th on the AFI’s list of 100 Best American Movies. And it gets an 8.8/10 on IMDb. And finally, Hulu added Please Stand By , a 2018 movie starring Dakota Fanning. She plays an autistic girl, run away from a group home. It also stars Toni Collette, Patton Oswalt and Marla Gibbs. I love the subject matter and it gets a 6.6/10 on IMDb.
Netflix
There are some exciting new additions on Netflix, as well and one of the best is Coco, the 2017 Oscar winner from Pixar. Its about a boy, Miguel, and his accidental Dia De Los Muertos visit to the land of the dead. It has a great cast, using the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal and Edward James Olmos. And it won many awards, including two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Song. It also get s 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5 on IMDb. Another great addition on Netflix this week is Outside In, a 2018 movie starring Jay Duplass and Edie Falco. It’s about a guy trying to make it through parole, after being in jail for twenty years. It also stars Ben Schwartz, Kaitlyn Dever and Pamela Reed. It gets a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.4/10 on IMDb. Another new movie on Netflix is Bad Genius, a 2017 movie from Thailand. This movie won multiple awards at different Asian Film Festival and at the New York Asian Film Festival. Based on news stories about SAT cheating, it stars Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying as a A student who devises a SAT scam that goes to unparalleled international heights. It also stars Chanon Santinatornkul and Thaneth Warakulnukroh. It gets a 7.8/10 on IMDb. Netflix also offers Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, the 2016 biopic about Hedy Lamarr. It was written and directed by Alexandra Dean and is an exhaustive look into Lamarr’s life and covers her not only her film career, but also her inventions and her passion for chemistry and other sciences. It gets a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.4/10 on IMDb. And, finally, Netflix has the last season of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s a sad fact that Kimmy Schmidt ends with it’s fourth season, but it’s been a wonderful ride on an inventive show, created by Tina Fey and starring Ellie Kemper, Jane Krakowski, Titus Burgess and Carol Kane. Critic Scott Meslow called it “the first great sitcom of the streaming era” and it gets a 7.8/10 on IMDb. Well worth your time.
Amazon Prime
There are some new additions on Amazon, too, the most acclaimed of which is The Disaster Artist, James Franco’s hit film of last year. It was also Franco’s directorial debut and features the true tale of Tommy Wiseau, who made the spectacularly awful movie The Room. It is a comedy, of course, and also stars Dave Franco, Seth Rogen and Alison Brie. It got a standing ovation at it’s SXSW premiere and gets a 7.5/10 on IMDb. Also, new on Amazon is Wonder Wheel, the 2017 Amazon Original movie starring Kate Winslet. It takes place in the 1950’s and concerns the family of a carousel operator, played by Jim Belushi. It also stars Juno Violet Temple, Justin Timberlake and Debi Mazar, but it was directed by Woody Allen, if you have any objections to his being involved, don’t watch. But Belushi especially got good reviews, it covers Coney Island in the 50’s and Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave it 3 out of 4 stars. It gets a 6.2/10 on IMDb , but a staggering 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, so beware. Amazon also offers The Last Movie Star, the 2017 Burt Reynolds movie. It stars Reynolds as an aging movie star, who is talked into accepting an award from a small film Festival in Nashville. It also stars Chevy Chase, Ariel Winter, Nikki Blonsky and Kathleen Nolan. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but gets a 48%(!) on Rotten Tomatoes. But if you love Burt Reynolds, this may be your pick. And, finally, don’t forget, Lady Bird comes to Amazon tomorrow, so don’t go buying it on Amazon today! It was the 2017 smash hit by Greta Gerwig , starring Laurie Metcalf in her Oscar winning role.
So veg out and binge for your summer weekend, and discover the great movies you can stream online!
