Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has very few titles added this week, but they do have Saturday Night, the 2024 biographical dramedy. This tells the story of the 1975 premiere of Saturday Night Live, on October 11. The story focuses on newbie producer Lorne Michaels(Gabriel LaBelle), who tries to control the chaos, while getting the show on the air, while his boss, NBC exec, Dick Ebersol(Cooper Hoffman) warns his skeptical superiors. But the show begins, with mishaps and an almost out-of-control cast, that makes success anything but certain. Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, Ella Hunt, Dylan O’Brien, Emily Fairn and Lamorne Morris also star, and Jason Reitman directed. And this movie premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival, and went on to win multiple awards in 2024, inducing Best Cast Ensemble at the Astra Film Awards and Best Screenplay for Reitman at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival. And it gets a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. and Gary M. Kramer of Salon.com said it “brims with tremendous affection for “SNL,” and those feelings feed viewers’ nostalgia. They may not speak to younger generations, but Reitman’s film is a sweet and goofy Valentine.” Hulu has also added Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston, a 2026 Nat Geo docuseries. This series, host Tom Hiddleston puts his classics degree to use, as he narrates the effort to trace over 200 survivors of the volcanic explosion that devastated Pompeii in 79 AD. With the research of Professor Steven Tuck, the series tries to follow three people especially, Avianius, Julia Felix, and an unnamed Praetorian guard. And there are three episodes here- all directed by Tom Barbor-Might, entitled, Tremors, Eruption, and Survival, that document the different stages of activity in ancient Pompeii. And this series gets a 7.2/10 on IMDb, and Addie Morfoot of Variety calls it “a rare doc that could actually attract a young audience.” But not just the young. Because I’m definitely tuning in. Hulu also offers seasons 1-4 of Snowpiercer, the 2020 sci fi thriller. This takes place seven years after the world has become a icy wasteland, with a train carrying the survivors on an unending journey. But all is not well on the train, as the elites inhabit the front end of the train, and the Tailers in the rear, planning rebellion. And then there’s the serial killer, and ex-cop(and Tailer) Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) may be the only one who can stop him(or her). Jennifer Connelly(!), Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, and Susan Park also star, and there are 40 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lucy Mangan of the Guardian said “exposition barrels along faster than the train itself (“Just making a quick stop at Gun on the Mantelpiece Station!”). In short, it’s perfect. Sit back, relax and take in the trash.” Perfect for summer, so I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has Padakkalam, a 2025 Malayam comedy. Here, four hapless college students discover the charismatic professor Ranjith(Sharafudheen) is using supernatural forces to control the campus. As the professor uses an ancient relic with magical forces to control not only occurrences, but also other professors on campus, the students have to find a way to undo its powers. But their path is not an easy one, and many calamities await them, before they can succeed. Suraj Venjaramoodu, Sharaf U Dheen, Pooja Mohanraj, Niranjana Anoop and Sandeep Pradeep also star, and Manu Swaraj directed. And this movie gets an impressive 7.2/10 on IMDb, and Anjana George of the Times of India calls it a “whimsical campus carnival with a supernatural twist,” adding it “offers a refreshing mix of supernatural thrills and laugh-out-loud comedy set in a vibrant campus backdrop.” So I’m tuning in.
NETFLIX
The biggest title added on Netflix this week, unfortunately, is 72 Hours, the 2026 comedy. But this movie isn’t worthy of a watch or a review. suffice it to say, 72 Hours got a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Nick Schager of the Daily Beast called it “a disaster of epic proportions.” Needless to say, I won’t bother. Luckily, Netflix has also added Musafir Cafe, a 2026 Hindi romance series. Here, Chander Mohan Sharma (Vikrant Massey), a software engineer in Bhopal, dreams of opening a cafe. But then he meets Sudha((Vedika Pinto), a lawyer, whose independence is of supreme importance. Years later, after Sudha refused to marry him, Chander finds himself opening his cafe, and he meets Preeti(Mahima Makwana), and falls under her spell. But then Sudha returns, to throw Chander‘s life into chaos. Adil Hussain, Rajeev Siddhartha and Ashi Malviya also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a remarkable 7.7/10 on IMDb, and Archika Khurana of the Times of India calls it “timeless romance” that ” stays with you long after the final episode, leaving you with fresh perspectives on love, ambition and the journeys that shape us.” So I’m watching. Netflix also offers You Can’t Expense This!, a 2026 Japanese romcom series. This follows Sanako Moriwaka(Mikako Tabe), an accountant who works for the Ten Ten Corporation, makers of soap. And Moriwaka pores every receipt that lands on her desk, she usually finds fault with something, taking her co-workers to task. And she ends up solving many mysteries at the office, and finds some romance. Sari Itô, Nana Katase and Hanae Kan also star, and there are 10 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets an exciting 7.2/10 on IMDb, and of calls it “light-hearted slice-of-life type of workplace drama.” And I’m watching. Netflix has also added Con City, 2026 Tamil comedy/crime drama. Here, Mithra(Anna Ben) and Saravana(Arjun Das) run a small restaurant living unassuming lives in Mulki near Mangalore. But then their son, Jeeva(Akilan), is kidnapped, and it turns out his parents are not so ordinary, after all. Because they’re retired con artists, and the pair comes to realize this kidnapping is connected to their past. And so they get together with their fellow grifters to complete on last con, to get their son back. Imman Annachi, Aruldoss and Yogi Babu also star, while Harish Durairaj directs. And this movie gets a smashing 8/10 on IMDb, and Abhinav Subramanian of the Times of India says “there’s nothing here you haven’t seen, but the cast makes the familiar go down smooth. Con City is happy being a decent hang, and you might be too.” So I’m watching. And finally, Netflix has added Spooky in Love, a 2026 K-drama supernatural mystery series. Also called Chilling Romance, this tells of Cheon Yeo-ri(Park Eun-bin), an heiress and hotel CEO, who can see ghosts, and is haunted by the recently deceased. Enter Ma Kang-wook(Yang Se-jong), a no-nonsense prosecutor who meets Yeo-ri, by chance. And soon, the two are investigating unsolved murder cases, with Yeo-ri getting help from the spirits that surround her. Ong Seong-wu, Jo Hye-joo, Kim Do-wan, and Ye Soo-jung also star, and there are 3 episodes available now, with another one dropping tomorrow, and 8 more to come, after that. And this series gets a remarkable 7.6/10 on IMDb, and Arpita Samaddar of MSN calls it “an intriguing mix of supernatural mystery and romance as a ghost-seeing businesswoman crosses paths with a prosecutor.” So I’m tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon has no big titles added, but they do have Love Is Never Gone, a 2026 Philippine romantic drama series. Here, Teo(Joshua Garcia) moves to Morocco in hopes of a better life, but falls under the spell of Yana(Ivana Alawi), only to find she is a thief, called the ‘Chameleon.’ When he learns she steals only to help her mother, Teo becomes involved with her, then finds himself accused of a crime and imprisoned. And when he rebuilds his life in Manila, after a pardon, he meets Gem, another man’s wife, and wonders who if she could, incredibly, be Yana. Jane Oineza, Jameson Blake, Dina Bonnevie and Michael de Mesa also star, and there are 14 episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.9/10 on IMDb, and Pauline Songco of the Tribune calls it “gripping tale of romance and survival.” So I’m watching. Amazon also offers Luden: Könige Der Reeperbahn, a 2023 German gangster series. Based on true events, this follows Klaus Barkowsky ( Aaron Hilmer ), a young man intent on becoming a Luden, or pimp, in 1980’s Hamburg. As the prostitute Jetta(Jeanette Hain) helps hm achieve that goal, they create the Nutella gang, but find that another gang, the GmbH, wants sole control of the area. And violence erupts between the two groups. Matthias Schweighöfer, Aaron Hilmer, and Henning Flüsloh also star, and there are 6 episodes available for streaming now. And this series won multiple awards in 2024, including Best Cinematography Fiction at the German Television Awards, and Best Director for Laura Lackmann and Stefan A. Lukacs at the German Television Academy Awards. And it gets a shining 7/10 on IMDb, and Sam of Aarcflick said “with its intricate plot, complex characters, and intense drama, this show is sure to captivate audiences and leave them wanting more.” But a bit too graphic and intense for me. And, finally, Amazon offers The Deep Dark, a 2023 French horror movie. This takes place in 1950‘s France, where a group of miners, like young Amir (Amir El Kacem) and Roland (Samuel Le Bihan), are asked to accompany a shady enigmatic professor down into a mine, Professeur Berthier(Jean-Hugues Anglade), to retrieve some archaeological samples. But once down there, they encounter a lethal gas bubble, and have to explode a charge to remedy the situation. But that explosion awakens something buried with the religious relics, an angry presence that wants revenge. Thomas Solivérès, Marc Riso and Bruno Sanches also star, and Mathieu Turi directs. And this movie won 4 awards, including Best Cinematography for Alain Duplantier, and Best Picture at the 2023 Screamfest, and won both Best Feature Film and Best Horror Film at the 2023 Toronto After Dark Film Festival. And it gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Julian Singleton of Cinapse called it “a lean, mean creature feature that manages to evoke a wide range of Francophone frights, including claustrophobic suspense and dread, buckets of gore, and plenty of cosmic terrors for knowing fans of weird tales.” So you know it’s too scary for me.
