New Movies and TV To Stream, Aug. 1

Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.

HULU

Hulu has some huge adds this week, starting with Furious, a 2026 thriller series. This finds a new FBI agent, Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) confronted with what appear to be the work of a serial killer. And as Alice investigates, she zeroes in on their main suspect Catherine,(Lola Petticrew), a woman sexually abused as a girl. But as it becomes apparent the two women share a tragic history of abuse, the parallels between them become to close, making Alice uneasy, but offering her an intimate insight into the killer’s next moves. Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, and Jake Lacy also star, and there are 5 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lucy Mangan of the Guardian says a “fantastic supporting cast and a dense, lean, evocative script make this television for grownups, television to pay attention to and to entertain you enormously.” So I’m watching. But Hulu also offers The Devil Wears Prada 2, the 2026 comedy. Here, the whole gang returns, with, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) now an award-winning journalist, rehired by Runway Mag, much to the chagrin of Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep!). Soon, though, Andy is helping the downcast Miranda deal with the new social media, and scandals that threaten her. Emily(Emily Blunt!), too, returns, to bring grief to Andy, while Nigel(Stanley Tucci!) enters to smooth everything out. Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux and Patrick Brammall also star, while David Frankel directs. And it gets a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Anupama Chopra of The Hollywood Reporter India said “sufficiently seductive but doesn’t deliver that shot of giddy joy like the first one did. This film is alluring and forgettable at once. But the thing is these characters are so attractive that you’re willing to go anywhere with them.” So it’s on my list. Hulu has also added Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, a 2026 mockumentary. This movie features best friends, Matt (Matt Johnson) and Jay (Jay McCarrol), who, for years, have dreamt of performing at the Rivoli, Toronto‘s legendary rock venue.. But after decades of effort, they’re no closer to that end, and so they decide for one last desperate stunt. Deciding to outfit a camper as a time machine, they stage a stunt at CN Tower, without notifying authorities, or the police. What ensues is hilarious chaos, if not musically groundbreaking. Matt Johnson(BlackBerry) directed, and this movie won Best Canadian Film at the 2025 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards, and Best Comedy Actor for Jay McCarroll, Best Supporting Comedy Actor for Matt Johnson, and Best Motion Picture at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards. And it gets an alarming 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Ben Travis of Empire Magazine called it “an instant cult-classic comedy that should be seen with a rowdy crowd — and then cherished for years to come on repeated quote-along home viewings.” So I’m watching. And, finally, Hulu has added Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu, a 2026 Hindu thriller. Here, as Inspector Reji(Vineeth Kumar) goes to investigate the distress signal of a missing cop, he finds a sinister forest, said to be haunted by locals. And Reti, Inspector Ashakan(Assim Jamal) and Anand(Askar Ali) find more bodies in the forest, while hearing sinister tales of people gone missing there. And as the violence in the area heightens, with tales of angry forest deities, the police wonder if they can ever solve the mystery, or even escape alive. Gouri Vineeth, Neethu Krishna and Kudassanad Kanakam also star, while Jithu Satheesan Mangalathu directs. And this movie gets a 7.3/10 on IMDb, and Aswin Bharadwaj of Lensman reviews called it “a thriller with a fascinating premise and reasonably effective execution” But it’s still too scary for me.

NETFLIX

Netflix has an exciting add with A Private Life, the 2025 French mystery/thriller . This finds psychiatrist Lillian (Jodie Foster) shocked to the core after the suicide of her patient, Paula (Virginie Efira). Ridden with guilt and anxiety, Lilian begins to wonder if Paula was actually murdered, and she begins to dig for answers. But when an ex-patient accuses of her of not helping him, where a hypnotist could, and her relationship with her son suffers, Lilian really starts to feel the heat. And as she continues to investigate, her ex-husband, and friend, Gabriel (Daniel Auteuil), is there to support her. Mathieu Amalric, Vincent Lacoste and Noam Morgensztern also star, and Rebecca Zlotowski directed. And Foster was nominated for Best Actress at the CinEuphoria Awards, the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards, and the Lumiere Awards for her work here. And this movie gets an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Kevin Maher of The Times said “writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski has crafted a deeply thoughtful film.” So I’m definitely tuning in. Netflix has also added Shine, a 2026 Thai historical romantic drama series. This takes place in 1969 Bangkok, with upright Trin(Nattawin Wattanagitiphat), an economist, returning from Paris, to help enact social reforms in Thailand. But Trin’s world views are upended when he meets Tanwa(Phakphum Romsaithong), a carefree hippie, with the band Moonshine, who obeys few rules. And then they meet Moira(Sinjai Plengpanich), who adds more chaos to the mixture. But political corruption and instability might threaten their happiness. Yuke Songpaisan, Mile Phakphum, Peter Deriy, and Yotsawat also star, and there are 8 episodes available for streaming now. And this series gets a 7.9/10 on IMDb, and Lopa K of the Review Geek calls it “a beautifully executed political romance.” So I’m watching. Netflix has also added Until the T-Shirt Dries, a 2026 Japanese mystery series. Here, Seo Sakiko (Yu Aoi), and her husband Seo Mitsuru (Kenichi Matsuyama) appear to have the perfect marriage. But then, Mitsuru‘s bus drives off a bridge, and though he is believed to have survived, he disappears without a trace. So Sakiko begins to question who he really was, and about her marriage, as she searches for her husband. But she also meets Itsuki Sonoda(Nakajima Ayumu) who lost his wife in the crash, and as the pair are drawn together, Sakiko fears disloyalty to her husband. Azusa Onoda, Kaho, and Saito Asuka also star, and there are episodes available now. And this series gets a 6.7/10 on IMDb, and Neerja Choudhuri of the Midgard Times says “the pacing is perfect, giving us enough time to grasp what is happening around. So all in all, if you are someone who likes such a genre, Until the T-Shirt dries is your perfect watch.” So I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers UnMarry, a 2025 Filipino romantic drama. This tells of Celine Santos (Angelica Panganiban), who approaches an attorney about an annulment(divorce does not exist in the Philippines) of her marriage to husband Stephen, and meets Ivan Castro( Zanjoe Marudo) whose wife is also asking for a separation. But as Celine recognizes her need for change, Ivan wants to stay married, while still drinking. But as the pair become friends, and commiserate with each other, they also find a bond that might see them through a painful end. Eugene Domingo, Tom Rodriguez and Solenn Heussaff also star, and Jeffrey Jeturian directed. And this movie won Best Director for Jeturian, and Best Picture at the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival. And it gets an amazing 7.5/10 on IMDb, and Philip Cu Unjieng of the Manila Bulletin called it “an engaging examination and dissection of the legal process for annulment of marriage in the Philippines,” And I’m watching. And, finally Netflix has added Rao Bahadur, a 2026 Telugu psychological drama. This tells the story of Ramappa Rao Bahadur(Satyadev), a dying aristocrat, who questions the legitimacy of his deceased youngest son, Kusuma. Obsessed with the boy’s darker skin, and his wife Renuka‘s admission of a long lost love, he makes the family’s life miserable at every turn. Finally, as he nears death, Ramappa pushes his eldest son risk arrest, by digging up Kusuma‘s remains, and subject his them to a DNA test. But will any answer satisfy him? Deepa Thomas, Vikas Muppala, Anand Bharathi, and Venkatesh Maha also star, and Venkatesh Maha directs. And this movie gets a smashing 8.4/10 on IMDb, and Sruthi Raman of The Hollywood Reporter India called it a “haunting, immersive mood piece.”

AMAZON

In a week of few adds on Amazon, they do offer Exhuma, a 2024 K-drama horror flick. Here, Shaman Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and her protégé Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun) are summoned to L.A., by the wealthy Park Ji-yong (Kim Jae-cheol). Park wants them to rid his infant son of a curse, so the pair travel back to S. Korea, to investigate the curse’s origins, with the help of geomancer Sang-deok (Choi Min-sik) and Young-geun (Yoo Hae-jin). But when they open an unmarked grave there, they unleash an evil spirit that may be impossible to contain. Kim Sun-young, Jung Yun-Ha, and Lee Do-hyun also star, and Jae-hyun Jang directed. And it gets a sparkling 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Naser Nahandian of Gazettely called it “a boldly inventive chiller that takes the familiar haunted heritage premise to enthralling new depths.” But you know it’s too scary for me! Amazon has also added Mr. K, a 2025 mystery thriller. Crispin Glover stars, here, as Mr. K, a traveling magician, who stops for the night at a run down hotel, managed by an unpleasant woman, who gives him a laundry list of things not to do. And when K wakes up, and leaves his room, with a cleaning woman in the closet, he finds it difficult to leave. In fact, in the lobby, he’s chased by a marching band, when he looks for the exit. And he finds that many his fellow lodgers don’t know of an exit, and a kitchen staff with workers like Anton (Jan Gunnar Røise), who have never been outside. Sunnyi Melles, Fionnula Flanagan, Bjørn Sundquist, and Dearbhla Molloy also star, and Tallulah Schwab directed. And Mr K gets a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and
Calum Marsh of the New York Times called it “a species of European art film I had assumed was long extinct: mannered, self-consciously quirky, with an offbeat sense of humor and a visual style that’s both fusty and surreal.” Watch if you dare. And, finally, Amazon has added The Old Woman with the Knife, a 2025 K-drama action thriller. This finds the veteran assassin Hornclaw(Hyeyoung Lee) asked by her employers to mentor Bullfight(Kim Sung-cheol), a somewhat disrespectful young man. And when they ask to to actually back her up on the job, she bridles, fearing they think she’s lost her edge, at 65. But the pair begin to grow close, until an attempt on Hornclaw‘s life, and she doesn’t know who she can trust. Yeon Woo-jin, Kim Moo-yul and Shin Sia also star, and Min Kyu-dong directed. And this movie was nominated for Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film at the 2025 Blue Dragon Awards, and gets an incredible 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. And Karina Adelgaard of Heaven of Horror called it “..a gorgeous genre-mix that I initially liked, but the ending was much better than I ever expected.” And I’m so tuning in.
