Yes, it’s that time again, the weekend, and time to review the best new movies and television shows added online this week, to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. And there are some exciting new adds this week, so let’s get started.
HULU
Hulu has a big add this week with Coven Academy, a 2026 dramedy fantasy series. This series finds newbie Briar (Malina Weissman), having difficulties at the Crescent Veil Academy, a school for witches. It seems Briar has anger issues that can lead to her powers suddenly leaking out, and causing damage, like to the office of headmistress, Ms. Graves (Tiffani Theissen). Luckily, Briar gets help from her new friends Tegan (Ora Duplass) and Sasha (Jordan Leftwich). But Briar has other problems, not so easily solved, like the murder of her mother the year before. And there are the supposed vampire attacks that have left 3 students missing. Still, you get the feeling these three friends can tackle anything that comes their way. Malachi Barton, Swayam Bhatia and Louis Thresher also star, and there are 21 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Aramide Tinubu of Malachi Barton, Swayam Bhatia and Louis Thresher also star, and there are 21 episodes available for bingeing now. And this series gets a stunning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Aramide Tinubu of Variety said “intriguing and heartfelt, with sinister elements, the show highlights the importance of sisterhood, the confounding nature of first love and why secrets can never really be vanquished.” So I’m watching. But Hulu has also added Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, a 2025 British crime thriller series. This series begins with a plane crash in the Mexican jungle, and nine passengers found days later, dead. But as their bodies are examined at the morgue, the story of what happened after the crash slowly unfolds, and we discover how each person died. There’s the rich girl, Amy (Jan Le), and her husband, Dan (Adam Long); Carlos (Peter Gadiot), and Dr. Kevin(Eric McCormack!), all of whom survive the crash, but don’t make it out of the jungle, alive. David Ajala, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Siobhán McSweeney also star, and there are 6 episodes available for streaming now. And this series, created by Anthony Horowitz(!). author of the Moriarty, House of Silk, and my favorite, Magpie Murders(!), gets an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lucy Mangan of the Guardian said “I don’t know that anything has given me greater or purer joy this year. Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is unabashed nonsense, without a trace of cynicism or guile in a world stuffed to bursting with both.” And I’m definitely watching. Hulu has added Olmo, a 2025 dramedy. This tells of thirteen year-old, Olmo (Aivan Uttapa), living with his mom, Cecilia (Andrea Suárez Paz) and his dad, Nestor (Gustavo Sánchez) in 1979, Las Cruces, New Mexico. But Nestor is bedridden by M.S., requiring round the clock care from Olmo or his sister Ana (Rosa Armendariz), while their mom is working double shifts. Meanwhile, Olmo would just like to hang out with bestie, Miguel (Diego Olmedo), and maybe, get up the nerve to approach the girl next door. Melanie Frometa, Valentin Mexico and Humberto Castro also star, while Fernando Eimbcke directed. And this movie was nominated for multiple awards in 2025, and went on to win the Jury Prize fo Eimbcke at the Deauville Film Festival that year. And it gets a massive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Sheri Linden of the The Hollywood Reporter said it “unfolds with the warm glow of a memory piece but none of the gooey sentimentality.” And I’m so tuning in. And, finally, Hulu has added The Substance, the 2024 award-winning horror movie. Here, when 50 year-old TV star Coralie Fargeat(Demi Moore!), is fired by producer Harvey (Dennis Quaid), because of her age, she becomes desperate. After a car crash that same day, Coralie learns of ‘The Substance,” a miracle anti-aging drug, from a nurse. But when Coralie hastily injects herself, she finds the new drug comes with a side effect- a new self Sue(Margaret Qualley), who hatches out of Coralie‘s side. It seems the two have to share one life, each alternating between one week of consciousness, and one week of unconsciousness. And as Sue becomes a new TV sensation, the two find themselves grappling for control, with no obvious way out. Edward Hamilton-Clark, Robin Greer and Gore Adams also star, while Coralie Fargeat directed. And this movie premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2024, where it won Best Screenplay, and compete for the Palme d’Or. It was also nominated for Best Picture, with Moore going on to win the Golden Globe Award, Critics’ Choice Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Actress. And this movie gets a on and Katie Walsh of the Tribune News Service said “Fargeat delivers a macabre, funny, tragic, absurd and grotesque Grand Guignol of butts and guts; a bonkers and brutal “beauty horror” that elevates the genre to a hysterically unprecedented heights.” But far too scary for me.
NETFLIX
Netflix has a huge title added this week with East of Eden, a 2026 drama series. In this newest adaptation of Steinbeck‘s classic 1952 novel, Cathy Ames(Florence Pugh!), is the central character, not her sons, Caleb and Aron, as in the 1952 movie. When half-brothers Adam(Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask(Mike Faist) find a bloodied Cathy on their doorstep, they take her in, despite Charles’ suspicions, which only grow as her stay progresses. And as Adam falls in love with Cathy, and asks her to marry him, it tears the two brothers apart. And as the years progress, Cathy’s choices bring more heartache and confusion for her family, with few understanding the reasons why, not even Cathy herself. Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciaran Hinds(!) and Joseph Zada also star, and there are 7 episodes available for streaming now. And this series, created by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of the 1955 movie’s directer Elia Kazan, gets an 7.8/10 on , and says “the combination of Pugh’s performance and the show’s unabashed insistence that her story is worth telling in its own right—on her own terms—makes for something that’s still deeply satisfying to watch.” And I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers Habeas Corpus, a 2026 Brazilian legal drama series. Here, professor Inez Franco(Marjorie Estiano) assembles a study group to investigate the case of Jonathan, a man serving time for murder. And as the study group proceeds, Marina(Any Gabrielly) proves especially tenacious and involved in the case. Convinced that an injustice has been done, Marina dedicates herself to proving Jonathan‘s innocence. But Marina herself has a secret, that could doom Jonathan‘s chances of a new life. Netflix has also added Midnight Girls, a 2026 Filipino drama. This movie follows four ight-club workers Vicky(Jodi Sta. Maria), Paris(Sanya Lopez), Wanna(Loisa Andalio) and Saki(Jane Oineza), in neon-lit Nagoya, Japan. But as they’re coached to be alluring for the male customers, they want something more, with their meager pay getting stretched to the limits. And as their families and significant others complain about their absence and their work, the women deal with the stress that has become a huge part of their lives. Loisa Andalio, Shamaine Buencamino and Meryll Soriano also star, while Irene Villamor directs. And this movie gets a whopping 8.2/10 on IMDb, and Anjali Sharma of the Midgard Times says “underneath the nightlife, the neon and the melodrama is a genuinely worthwhile story about women who have travelled far from home because staying wasn’t an option they could afford.” So I’m tuning in. Netflix also offers My Sad Dead, a 2026 Argentine horror series. Based on the stories of Mariana Enríquez, this tells of Emma (Mercedes Morán), a retired doctor, who can see and speak to the dead. Living in her recently passed mother’s house in Buenos Aires, Emma is irritated by the arrival of her sister Lidia (Alejandra Flechner), who brings her daughter Julie (Carolina Sánchez Álvarez). But, while Lidia wants psychological treatment for Julie, Emma can see her niece merely shares her gift for communicating with the dead, and so, Julie stays on. But can Emma help Julie deal with the trauma of what she sees? Dolores Fonzi, Luz Jiménez and Carlos Portaluppi also star, and there are 4 episodes available now. And this series gets an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and Joel Keller of the Decider says to stream it, adding it’s “definitely creepy and strange, and a little hard to wrap your mind around at first, but it’s also a raw and unsparing look at death and mental illness.” So it’s on my list. And, finally, Netflix has added Irreplaceable, a 2026 C-drama romance series. Here, after Xu Chi(Zhao Jinmai), begins working as a consultant at the Maxmise firm, after graduate school, she fights to become ‘irreplaceable’ there. But competition is fierce at Maxmise, with everyone afraid of being replaced. So when Lin Long(Bing Bai) agrees to mentor Chu, she does so because she sees little to fear from her quiet protege. And this series gets an incredible 8.6/10 on IMDb, and Jeff Souza of papodedrama says “it’s especially worth watching for viewers who enjoy corporate dramas such as Agency, where a promotion never means only a new job title. It can mean security, identity and confirmation that someone still has a place in that world.” And I’m tuning in.
AMAZON
Amazon has few adds of note this week, other than Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the 2025 sequel. The Four Horsemen, J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco), this time to steal the heart diamond from Veronica Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike!). But the massive diamond is a result of the Vanderberg’s engaging in crimes, including money laundering, that make them the target. But while they go up against the crime syndicate, the Horsemen also have help from a newer generation of magicos that have been imitating the Horsemen, onstage. Morgan Freeman returns, and Ariana Greenblatt, Justice Smith and Dominic Sessa also star, while Ruben Fleischer directed. And this movie gets a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Bob Mondello of NPR said “Eisenberg’s prickly snark is still fun, but with the tricks getting less convincing and the scripts more exhausting, it might be time for this franchise to go up in a puff of smoke.” You decide. Luckily, Amazon also offers I would Rather Die, a 2026 Mexican coming of age horror series. Here, when young Archie(Diego Bernal) makes a late night purchase, he doesn’t expect a confrontation with the undead. But when he’s bitten by a zombie clerk there, Archie begins to experience strange symptoms. As he realizes he too is undead, he gets help from his friend Cris(Lilith Curiel).
